For the known players, most have not been ranked before because not enough information was available to appropriately include them. Ahead of the next rankings refresh, which will be the final one for the 2021 class, I take a look at top available talent that is guaranteed to appear in that final release. The previous articles in the series covered point guards, wings and small forwards, and power forwards and centers. In early January shooting guards were covered ahead of the series. I look at the posts and small forwards here. A forthcoming look at guards will be the fifth and final installment. As before, statistics are primarily drawn from MaxPreps and KC High School Hoops. Other credible and transparent sources may be drawn upon as well. Now let’s get started.
Brooke Berlin, 6’2″, C, Clearwater – 18 points against Wellington. 18 points 10 rebounds against Circle. Long, good hands. Quickness to play in the back court of the press. Keeps the ball up high and shoots quickly off the catch. Can score around the rim with contact. Good transition speed.
Ames Burton, 5’8″, PF, Riley County – Burton was a Mid-East League first team selection in 2020. This past June PGH’s Eric Pannell described her as a hard-nosed player who defends, garbage collects inside, and transitions well.
Kaylie Combs, 5’10”, PF, Fairfield, KS Dream Team – Combs averaged 15 points and 7 rebounds in 2020. She has a big build, fair handles, and is able to finish off the bounce.
Courtney Forte, 5’9″, SF, Minneapolis – Forte works hard at and has the length to deny entry passes into the post. She elevates well on rebounds, takes care of the ball in the back court, has solid transition speed, and makes good interior looks inside. Against Valley Heights she racked up 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists against a big Valley Heights team. Would like to see her improve her free throw shooting.
Brittany Gosch, 5’9″, PF, Norwich – 1.15.21 at Pretty Prairie – Solid and strong with some length. Flat shot but hits mid-range well. Can score around the rim. Limited post up game but what she does is effective. Face-up game can put the ball on the floor some in mid-range and finish on the move but limited ability. Elevates well on rebounds and clears well. 2020 Heart of the Plains all-league. Transfer from Eisenhower. Some places is listed as 5’11”.
Grace Hendrickson, 5’11”, SF, Pretty Prairie – Hendrickson, shown in the featured image, is a solid perimeter and mid-range shooter. She competes and runs well. She is also an offensive threat around the rim.
Danielle Kerns, 5’11”, F, Osage City, Wheat State Elite – In state tournament loss to Nemaha Central had 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 turnovers. Solid size and length. Good anticipation for interior steals and shot blocking. Garbage collector around the basket. Can finish on both sides of the rim with both hands at speed. Mid-range scoring ability. Basic back-to-basket game. Decent hands. North-South transition speed but not especially quick. Heady.
Madysen Lange, 5’8″, SF, Minneapolis – Lange has good hands, a solid build, good transition speed, and works well out of the short corner. Scoring 4 points and 2 steals against Valley Heights, she especially moves well to open spots and on cuts – which makes it easy to loose track of her.
