Continue ReadingWith such a turbulent season many of the best teams in the state of New Jersey weren’t able to play in the postseason. The Cape-Atlantic League was one of the conferences where play ended with the regular season, but that didn’t stop the players from showing out in the limited time they did have. This is the Cape-Atlantic League team of the year.
G: Nay Nay Clark, Oakcrest: While Oakcrest as a whole had a pretty underwhelming year things could have gone much worse if they didn’t have Nay Nay Clark leading the team. The senior leader put up averages of 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game, proving to everyone she is much more than just a one dimensional scorer. Because Oakcrest isn’t a state powerhouse Clark didn’t get the recognition she deserved, but once again she showed that she was one of the top guards in the conference.
G: Kate Herlihy, Middle Township: Pegged as one of the teams that should be atop the conference in the preseason, Middle Township didn’t disappoint. An 8-1 record was good enough to hold the top spot in the East Division, many of those wins coming at the hands of dominant play by senior Kate Herlihy. In her final high school season Herlihy averaged 22.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and made 2.4 three pointers per game. A true three level scoring threat, Herlihy dominated on both ends of the court and gave fans something to look forward to every night.
G: Samantha Jones, Vineland: Coming off of a rough season last year hopes were not high for this years Vineland team. Many were stunned to see their final record sitting at 12-2, but the stellar play of sophomore Samantha Jones seemed to be the catalyst for the quick turnaround. In just her second year on the team Jones put up averages of 14.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 5.5 steals per game, showing her two way game is continuously growing. Her quick hands and top tier Basketball IQ allow her to pick off lazy passes and get out quick in transition, something she relied on heavily this year. With two more seasons left in her high school career expect to hear Samantha Jones’ name much more.
F: Marianna Papazoglou Marianna Papazoglou 5'11" | SG Wildwood Catholic | 2021 State NJ , Wildwood Catholic: Heading to play Division I basketball at the University of Pennsylvania next season, Marianna Papazoglou Marianna Papazoglou 5'11" | SG Wildwood Catholic | 2021 State NJ ended her high school career the same way she started it, by dominating. The senior forward was too much for any team in the conference to handle, averaging 25.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.9 steals per game and making highlight reel plays every time she was on the court. A post threat that isn’t afraid to let it fly from deep, Papazoglou is a threat anywhere on the court and she proved that again this season. Cape-Atlantic League fans are going to miss watching her play in high school, but she is headed to dominate at the next level.
C: Jaiden Harris, Our Lady of Mercy: There aren’t many centers in the state of New Jersey better than Jaiden Harris, and she made sure everyone knew that in her senior season. The center put up averages of 10.7 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 2.7 steals per game showing everyone that she can carry a team both offensively and defensively. Her combination of speed and strength in the middle of any offense or defense is enough to dominate but she allowed her teammates to make plays and provide help, proving she is way more than just a top tier athlete, she has the smarts that can take her to the next level.
