The High School Season has concluded, and 7 State Champions were crowned. Let’s take a look around Florida on what has been going on in the last couple weeks.
Al Honor (Lake Highland Prep) has been selected as Naismith Girls High School Coast of the Year. After leading Lake Highland Prep to an undefeated season, a state championship and a top 5 national ranking, Coach Honor was recognized for his coaching this season. Check out the full article HERE.
In addition, Lake Highland Prep season is not over, as they have been selected to participate in the GEICO Nationals April 2-3 in Fort Myers, FL to compete for a national championship. The four-team field is set as Lake Highland Prep will go up against Westlake (GA), Paul VI (VA), and Fremont (Utah). All four participating teams are undefeated, and it will be over a month in between games for Coach Honor and Lake Highland Prep as they last played February 27 in the State Championship.
COLLEGE RECRUITING NEWS
2022 Jordana Codio Jordana Codio 6'1" | SF Montverde Academy | 2022 State FL has re-opened her recruiting. Codio is one of Florida’s top players in the 2022 class. She had verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin two years ago but made the decision to re-open her recruiting after Wisconsin Head Coach Jonathan Tsispis was recently relieved of his duties as head coach.
2021 Cheyenne Stubbs Cheyenne Stubbs 5'7" | CG Braden River | 2021 State FL (Braden River HS) was our highest ranked Senior in our class of 2021 rankings who had yet to make a college recruiting decision. The 5’6 savvy guard recently verbally committed to Canisius College in New York.
Congrats to Athaliah Brown Athaliah Brown CG Fort Lauderdale HS | 2021 State FL (Fort Lauderdale HS) on signing with Palm Beach State College! The 5’7 Guard averaged 22.6 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals per game this season for the Flying L’s.
2021 5’8 Guard Camille Samuel (Tampa Prep) has committed to Macalester College (MN) to continue her education and her basketball career.
2021 5’6 Guard Stephanie Almodovar (Mater Lakes) recently made the decision to commit to Fort Scott (KS).
2021 Valentina Ojeda (Montverde Academy) recently verbally committed to Independence Community College (KS).
2021 Forward Alyanna McGrath Alyanna McGrath 5'10" | PF Coral Glades HS | 2021 State FL (Coral Glades HS) is headed to Georgia to suit it up for Oglethorpe University.
2021 Joselish De Pool Maisonet is headed to NYACK College.
Who Is Staying in Florida?
A number of players made recruiting decisions that will keep them in the sunshine state.
2021 Maria Myklebust (Montverde Academy) is headed to the panhandle next season to play at Northwest Florida State College.
2021 Jania James (West Orange HS) is staying in Florida and will sit it up for Warner University.
2021 Kyla Cruz Kyla Cruz CG West Orange HS | 2021 State FL (West Orange HS) is also staying in Florida and is headed to Hillsborough CC next season!
2021 6’0 Forward/Center Alana Sharpe Alana Sharpe 6'0" | C Western | 2021 State FL (Western HS) will join Kyla Cruz Kyla Cruz CG West Orange HS | 2021 State FL at Hillsborough CC.
2021 Taviyanna Habib Taviyanna Habib 5'9" | CG Armwood | 2021 State FL (Armwood HS) is headed to Indian River CC.
2021 Keegan Brace Keegan Brace 5'7" | CG Lake Howell | 2021 State FL (Lake Howell / TNBA South) was ranked as one of the state’s top uncommitted guards and recently made the decision to continue her academic and athletic career at Flagler.
TRANSFER NEWS
Two of the state’s top 2022 prospects recently made the announcement to transfer to Montverde Academy. Janiah Barker Janiah Barker 6'2" | SF Montverde Academy | 2022 State #3 Nation FL is the # 1 ranked player in the Florida Girls Prep Hoops class of 2022 rankings and Jordana Codio Jordana Codio 6'1" | SF Montverde Academy | 2022 State FL is ranked # 8. The 6’2 Barker played her first 3 years of high school at Tampa Bay Tech while 6’1 Codio spent her first 3 seasons at American Heritage Del Ray. Montverde is coming off an exceptional season that had them ranked consistently in the top 5 of the country. Codio and Barker are a huge boost to an already extremely talented roster!
Asiana Britt Asiana Britt 5'7" | CG DME Academy | 2023 State FL 5’8 Guard has recently announced her decision to transfer from Ribault High School to DME Academy.
