The following list ranks the top five undecided guards in the Maryland area. Every player on this list is more than ready to play at the collegiate level and this article serves to boost their talents in the eyes of scouts and potential programs where they could be recruited to play.
#5| 2021 5-7 PG Paige Brown Paige Brown 5'7" | PG Capital Christian Academy | 2021 State MD – Capital Christian Academy
Given that Paige and the Capital Christian Academy basketball squad might not play a single game this year, recognizing her spot on this list seems even more appropriate. Paige is a leader on and off the court who will always impact the team in a positive way. She’s a pure point guard who can distribute the basketball at a high level and her turnover rate is nearly non-existent. If anyone has a career in coaching beyond playing the game it’s Paige, and there’s no doubt that she is ready for the next step beyond the high school level.
#4| 2021 5-6 PG Zoe Vidaurre Zoe Vidaurre 5'6" | PG St. John's College HS | 2021 State MD – St. John’s College HS – Germantown Lady Panthers
There should be keen interest on Zoe because of her experience. For years she has been a key player on a highly competitive St. John’s team that recently almost ended Paul VI’ undefeated season. Plus, Zoe’s play and activity on her grassroots team of the Germantown Lady Panthers has only further cemented her as one of the area’s top ten senior point guards. The entire WCAC, Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, should watch out for Zoe and the St. John’s Cadets this season therefore scouts should too.
#3| 2021 5-9 PG Sarah Austin Sarah Austin 5'9" | PG National Christian Academy | 2021 State MD – National Christian Academy
What Sarah provides for her team is immense unselfishness. She also possesses great versatility as a scorer, but largely as a passer, and she is unafraid to play either guard position. Her willingness to get all of her teammates involved increases the team’s overall efficiency and more often than not leads to a victory. Her positive attitude seems to always uplift her teammates as the NCA, National Christian Academy, consistently dominated and finished seasons with winning records during Sarah’s tenure. While NCA’s season might not even happen this year due to the pandemic, scouts should by no means forget about Sarah Austin Sarah Austin 5'9" | PG National Christian Academy | 2021 State MD as she remains a definite collegiate level prospect today.
#2| 2021 5-6 PG Morgan McMahon Morgan McMahon 5'6" | PG St. James School | 2021 State MD – St. James School – Germantown Lady Panthers
Morgan McMahon Morgan McMahon 5'6" | PG St. James School | 2021 State MD has huge upside and the potential to be the best collegiate player on this list. She has great length for her size and uses it well specifically in transition to score and on defense to stop ball movement. She can also shoot lights out from beyond the arc which is a must have attribute for guards at the next level. Morgan is a division one basketball player in every way and it would be shocking to see her anywhere else.
#1| 2021 5-8 PG Zy’aire Hairston Zy’aire Hairston 5'7" | PG Dunbar | 2022 State MD – Dunbar – D.C. Premier
Zy’aire Hairston Zy’aire Hairston 5'7" | PG Dunbar | 2022 State MD is going to be flat out dangerous at the next level. As my co-worker Tink Butler wrote about her in 2020, “Zy’Aire is an excellent point guard with incredible vision. She has great vision and sees plays well before they actually develop.” As Zy’Aire continues to grow and develop herself, her basketball IQ is going to pay dividends as the opposition and coaching she faces become more elite. If any programs out there have not yet extended her an offer then it would be wise to change that immediately.
