Only the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been able to fool with Mullen’s Class 4A run.
Well, kind of …
The Mustangs, headed by their current crop of a half-dozen seniors, won it all in 2019, made the 2020 final — only to have it cancelled (they count it as a co-championship) — and grabbed a seventh title the past Sunday, waxing Windsor 67-44 in Colorado Springs with less than 150 people permitted to attend.
Here’s some of what the front-liners accomplished:
Megan Pohs Megan Pohs 5'3" | PG Mullen | 2021 State CO
The Mustangs’ undisputed leader didn’t panic after a scoreless first half. All she did was drill four 3-pointers in the third quarter to officially turn it into a rout. She also broke the press and kept the ball moving, too much of a lost art today. She’s headed to Regis University.
Gracie Gallegos Gracie Gallegos 6'1" | SF Mullen | 2022 State CO
Mullen’s 2022 guard-forward can officially welcome her array of Division I offers. An all-around contributor, including on defense, Gallegos led all scorers in the final with 17 points in making 5-of-8 shots and 7-of-7 free throws. Her inside-outside game was about as good as it got in 2020-21.
Kilah Freelon Kilah Freelon 6'0" | PF Mullen | 2022 State CO
Alert! We have an emerging talent. Mullen’s lithe, long 6-foot-1 2022 got the start and delivered. She piled up 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and seven blocked shots. Her ability to swoop across the lane was eye-catching and she responded after being idle for weeks after a concussion.
Alexa Dominguez Alexa Dominguez 5'8" | SF Mullen | 2021 State CO
She’s one of those players who seemed to be involved in everything and all of the time. Whether the Mullen guard-forward started or came off the bench, she filled a box score with numbers, such as the 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in her finale as a schoolgirl.
Olivia Reed Olivia Reed 6'0" | SF Windsor | 2022 State CO
Give the 2022 Windsor small forward credit – she battled height and length all season before running into Mullen’s Freelon and 6-2 Imani Perez Imani Perez 6'3" | PF Mullen | 2022 State CO . She still managed 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals against 4A’s premier front line.
Alexis Backhaus Alexis Backhaus 5'9" | SG Windsor | 2022 State CO
The Wizards 2022 shooting guard only managed eight shots against pressure defense, but turned them into eight points. She added seven rebounds and two steals.
