High school basketball regular seasons have been given the green light to get underway, but this is the same time that AAU programs and events are usually starting up. Due to the fluid situation, the CIF has allowed players to play for both their high school team and AAU team concurrently. Here’s a little look at some of the players who have been standouts this month either with their HS team, AAU team, or both.
1. Breya Cunningham Breya Cunningham 6'3" | C La Jolla Country Day | 2023 State #3 Nation CA – La Jolla Country Day 2023
Cunningham is one of the top post prospects in the country. She’s split her time this spring playing for LJCD and has suited up with Cal Stars on the AAU circuit. She’s very skilled in the post and strong. She can get her shot off over the defense. She’s patient and establishes position well. I saw her play when she was just a freshman and she’s improved a lot since then. She moves well without the ball too and can be an interior anchor defensively.
2. Mackenly Randolph Mackenly Randolph 5'10" | PF Sierra Canyon | 2024 State CA – Sierra Canyon 2024
Randolph is another one of the most intriguing inside prospects in SoCal. She’s been playing with Sierra Canyon and recently suited up with Cal Swish on the EYBL circuit. She’s very strong in the post and skilled for a freshman. She can score on the block and she can also step out and shoot from the midrange a bit. She can handle the ball at times too. Good rebounder on the offensive glass. She’s a good defender who moves her feet well and can contest shots both inside and on the perimeter.
3. Hannah Stines Hannah Stines 5'9" | SG Troy HS | 2022 State CA – Orangewood Academy 2022
Stines has done a good job improving her stock even before the season started up. She’s been playing with her HS team and playing with Cal Storm on the EYBL circuit. She’s a wing who is comfortable with the ball in her hands and creating for both herself and teammates too. She has a solid off the dribble game and can get to the rim and finish. She can shoot off the dribble and is a consistent three-point threat. Uses screens and fakes to get herself free for a jumper.
4. Kaylee Byon Kaylee Byon 5'6" | PG Rosary Academy | 2022 State CA – Rosary 2022
Byon has been a standout this spring both with Rosary Academy and with Troop West on the Adidas circuit. She’s’ strong in transition and can go from one end to the other and finish. She’s comfortable dribbling under pressure and can utilize the 1-2 dribble pull up. She has great court vision, especially on the break. Keeps her head up and looks for cutters around the rim. Good body control around the rim. Consistent outside shooter.
5. Sydni Summers – Coronal Centennial 2023
Summers has also been playing for West Coast United on the AAU circuit and is a very solid guard prospect. I first saw her play as a freshman against Windward in the Southern Section Open Division playoffs and she was a huge reason why the Huskies made the game competitive. She’s a quick guard who runs the break well and finds her open teammates. She’s strong and uses her body to get into the lane and finish over the defense. Good shooter from three-point range. Good wing defender.
