Some of this past seasons sophomores had breakout seasons. Let’s remember that a ’breakout season’ can include many different scenarios. It could be that a player was very good and just got noticed, or maybe they improved so much that their game looked totally different. It could be that a player stepped his game a level or more. These are just a few examples of what a ’breakout season’ may entail. With that being said, let’s take a look at some players from the class of 2023 that I thought had a breakout high school season.
Zoie Bamm Zoie Bamm 6'1" | PF Brooklyn Columbia Central | 2023 State MI (PF, Brooklyn Columbia Central)
Bamm’s talent and upside were more than evident last grassroots season, but it’s a whole different challenge bringing that into high school season. Bamm turned that talent and upside into flat out domination. During high school season, she consistently owned the paint and set the tone of the game from the post.
Morganne Houk Morganne Houk 5'7" | SG Plymouth Christian Academy | 2023 State MI (SG, Plymouth Christian)
Houk had a terrific sophomore season for Plymouth Christian. We always knew that could shoot, and boy can she shoot. Houk was hitting mid range jumpers and deep triples consistently all season. This year though, it was her ability to attack the rim and her improvement on the defensive end that raised her game.
Sela Lefler Sela Lefler 5'6" | PG North Farmington | 2023 State MI (PG, North Farmington)
Lefler previously floated a bit under the radar. This is, until the Prep Girls Hoops Michigan Top 250 in the fall. From that point on, Lefler’s talent and game were on display. She is a disciplined shooter with 3 point range. Lefler works hard when the ball isn’t in her hands as well.
Malena Price Malena Price 5'10" | SG Birmingham Groves | 2023 State MI (G/F, Birmingham Groves)
Price has always been loaded with talent, but she and the Birmingham Groves coaching staff did an excellent job turning her game up. She’s a gritty wing that isn’t afraid to have the ball in her hands in crunch time and has the ability and the mental toughness needed to take the big shot.
Bre Thomas Bre Thomas 5'10" | SG Westfield Prep | 2023 State MI (SG, Westfield Prep)
I was told that I had to see Bre Thomas Bre Thomas 5'10" | SG Westfield Prep | 2023 State MI this season, so I made sure to watch. The person telling me sure was right. She did all the little things and was a valuable glue type player. Thomas really worked hard on defense and picked up a lot of big stops. When playing some elite competition, Thomas managed to have her game stand out. In my opinion, she’s loaded with upside and this season could just be the start.
