The Travel season has kicked off. We will check in with teams all around the state with an outlook on their season and a breakdown of some of their top players. This week we take a look at Miami Suns Top 17U Team Miami Suns Team Fowles.
2022 Joey Delancy Joey Delancy 5'8" | CG American Heritage | 2022 State FL (American Heritage) 5’9 Guard/Wing
Delancy is one of the few athletes in this generation keeping the mid-range game alive! This kid is a gym rat who continues to improve every time I see her play. Her work ethic is unmatched and is a testament to why Delancy has transitioned from being a wing/forward to more of a combo guard who can be a facilitator. She has a strong build, has great court vision, with a high basketball IQ and is extremely versatile!
2022 Amiya Evans Amiya Evans 6'2" | PF DME Academy | 2022 State FL (Tampa Bay Tech) 6’2 Forward
Evans is a tremendous force down low in the paint. If she establishes low post
positioning on the block or deeper, allowing her to catch the ball is a huge mistake! She has a strong lower body and uses it well to catch the ball deep in the paint and score off drop steps. Evans does a great job reading the defense and pivoting over both her left and right shoulders and can finish with both hands. Not only does Amiya have great footwork, she also has improved her range that allows her to stretch out to the high post and to the 3-point line stretching out the defense and forcing opposing teams to really communicate and work to guard her. Evans has been one of the most improved players in the 2022 class over the last two years and has shown to be a post player who loves to play and gets in the gym and puts in work. Since last summer, she has garnered a ton of attention from ACC, SEC, Big 10, and Big 12 schools skyrocketing into one of the top 100 players nationally. Look for her to continue to attract attention from BCS schools and move up the rankings if she continues to develop and improve at the same rate!
2022 Tyra Kennedy Tyra Kennedy 5'6" | CG Brooks DeBartolo | 2023 State FL (Tampa Bay Tech 5’5 Guard
Kennedy brings Team Fowles great energy off the bench! A newcomer to the team and high school teammate of Amiya Evans Amiya Evans 6'2" | PF DME Academy | 2022 State FL , Kennedy is still establishing her role within the team. So far, she has displayed the ability to get in her opponents shorts on defense! She offers another crafty guard to the Fowles roster and look for her role to increase as she establishes a comfort level with her new team.
2022 Janay Quinn Janay Quinn 5'2" | PG Miami Sr. HS | 2022 State FL (Miami Senior HS) 5’6 Guard
Don’t let Quinn’s small size fool you, she is capable of competing with the best of them and is the definition of heart over height. Quinn’s strengths include great change of speed and court vision making her one of the better shifty guards in her class. A true floor general that controls the pace of the game and puts her teammates in positions to be successful. Janay values her defense as much as her offense, she will torment and disrupt her opponent and truly embraces being a pest. The 2021 Sunshine State Showdown was a bit of a coming out party for her, as she has mainly played with her high school team during travel ball season. Known for her defense, Quinn put her offensive skill on display vs Hoop Dreams Elite and Essence, showcasing her ability to knock down the 3, score in the mid-range, and use her athleticism and change of speed to get all the way to the rim!
2022 Sydney Shaw Sydney Shaw 5'9" | SG DME Academy | 2022 State FL (American Heritage) 5’10 Guard
Sydney Shaw Sydney Shaw 5'9" | SG DME Academy | 2022 State FL has been on the exposure basketball circuit since 8th grade and has established herself as one of the state’s top offensive players. She is an offensive specialist that can score at will in a variety of ways and is a threat to score every time she touches the ball. Whether it is getting to the rack, pulling a mid-range jumper or lighting defenses up from 3; if her team needs a bucket, she’s getting it. Shaw is also a great distributer, drawing 2 and sometimes 3 defenders, she does a great job finding the open man and capitalizing in those situations. Known her offensive abilities, it was Shaw her drew the assignment of UCF verbal commitment Stefanie Ingram Stefanie Ingram 5'7" | CG Lake Highland | 2022 State FL in the final seconds of a 1-point game vs Hoop Dreams Elite, forcing her into a tough show from the perimeter that Ingram ultimately missed, and Team Fowles came away with the 54-53 win. Shaw followed that game up with an excellent performance on both ends of the floor vs Essence, knocking down free throws in the final seconds to give Team Fowles two victories on Saturday of Sunshine State Showdown and helping her squad to a 3-1 record on the weekend.
2023 Rhema Collins Rhema Collins 6'2" | SF Webb(TN) | 2023 TN (Schoolhouse Prep) 6’2 Wing/Forward
Collins is another newcomer to the Miami Suns. The 6’2 Wing/Forward adds a different set of skills to Team Fowles post game and gives them needed depth in the front court. She has a very athletic body, runs the floor well, is versatile on both ends of the floor. She is very effective on the defensive end at the top of a full-court press showcasing her long wingspan and athleticism. In the paint, she is a force, establishing an interior presence in the paint with her shot blocking and rebounding ability. Offensively, Collins contributes mostly off put backs and in transition. Her talent is raw and a bit unpolished but she has tremendous upside and will be a fun one to watch over the next 2 years!
2023 D’Yanis Jimenez D’Yanis Jimenez 5'9" | PG Charlotte | 2023 State FL (Charlotte HS) 5’7 Guard
The Charlotte High School star returns for her second season on the Miami Suns Team Fowles. Coming off of an amazing state-run the Miami Suns are expecting another great travel season from Jimenez. D’Yanis is a knock down shooter who forces defenders to close her out beyond the 3-point line and does a great job baiting defenders to close out hard and hit them with a shot fake and gets all the way to the rim. She is crafty and savvy with the ball in her hands and makes things look easy in transition and 1v1 situations.
2024 Kayla Nelms Kayla Nelms 6'1" | PF Miami Country Day | 2024 State FL (Miami Country Day) 6’2 Forward
Nelms is the team’s youngest player and is coming off a state championship with Miami Country Day where she was one of the teams most consistent and dependable players. She has the size and ability to put her opponents at a disadvantage based off of matchups where she can go inside and out. The 6’2 Freshman, stretches defenses out and forces a big into an uncomfortable position to defend the perimeter. Inside, Nelms has a strong hook shot and counter moves to go with it. If Nelms, can continue to work on her body and improve her speed to become a better defender and threat in transition, this Freshman could potentially establish herself as one of the top players nationally in the 2024 class!
