So many good players, in fact, that I am sure I won’t get to all of them here. Stay tuned over the next week for not only the All-Duel team, but for a closer look at ALL of the standouts from the weekend.
Maleighya Estes Maleighya Estes 5'8" | CG White River | 2022 State SD | 5-7 G/F | Unity Basketball | 2022
Estes was a revelation for a very, very good Unity squad. The team rode her hot hand to a 2-2 record for the weekend as she was a HUGE part of both wins for her team. In the first game of the day, Estes used what was probably the best mid-range jumper in the building to rack up 30 points. If you think the mid-range is a lost art, you need to check out the video below or see her at Unity’s future PGH Circuit stops. She is a phenomenal athlete with really good length who goes hard all game long. She has silky smooth handles and creates plenty of space on her own to release that gorgeous jumpshot which goes in pretty much every single time.
Makenna Shaffer Makenna Shaffer 5'10" | CG Northridge | 2023 AZ | 6-1 F | New Mexico D1 | 2022 | @makennaxleigh
Also featured in the above video is a tremendous scorer from Colorado who plays for a very good New Mexico D1 squad on the PGH Circuit. She is extremely long and can most definitely play inside and outside. She has handles and gets low to the ground when driving in order to get the most out of them – and not give defenders a shot at the ball. She has a high release due in part to her very long arms and also because she just has a very good shooting stroke. She is a clutch player who is unafraid to take the big shot. She plays good defense, as well. According to her coach she has “Ivy League grades” and from watching her play I can tell you that she has Ivy League basketball ability plus some.
Kyra Stokes | 6-1 F/C | O.W.E. Family Renegades Elite | 2022
Kori Rice | 6-1 F/C | O.W.E. Family Renegades Elite | 2022
I couldn’t help but to list these two players together after seeing them dominate the paint in the mold of a Tim Duncan and David Robinson. They are both very tall and very, very long. Stokes has nice touch in the paint and showed off a really good close-range turnaround jumper. She gets a lot of rebounds whether she is on the court without the help of Rice or not. The same is true for Kori. She gets really good position on the block and fights hard for every ball. She is very good on the put-back and the two led their squad to an outstanding 3-1 record on the weekend. O.W.E. Family is a really good squad and will be a lot of fun to watch as the circuit progresses and so will Stokes and Rice as they become more and more adept at playing together down low.
