PGH NJ moves on in the SEC to the Freedom division, one that saw just four of its six teams in the division play. However, that didn’t diminish from the competition on the court, as it was as fierce as ever.
Alana Nickels – F/G, West Side
Nickels had an impressive junior season for West Side, who was the class of the Freedom division, finishing with a 9-3 record and 5-1 record in divisional play. She averaged 12.8 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.3 BPG and 2.3 SPG this season for the Roughriders, showing significant signs of improvement from her first season on varsity as a sophomore. She’s solidified herself as a premier shot-blocker, a strong interior presence and an all-around playmaker. Nickels showcased a much greater eagerness to shoot from the outside, and while her game is played in the interior, where she shines, having that ability to shoot the three adds an extra tool to her overall game. Next season is a promising one for Nickels and for West Side for sure.
Anisha Able – F/C, Barringer
For the third-straight season, Able finished with double-double averages and was one of the most dominant forwards in the conference in 2021. She averaged 12.3 PPG, 14.7 RPG, 4.2 BPG and 2.2 SPG for Barringer this season and continued to be the backbone of the team throughout the season. Able has continued her strong interior presence for Barringer, an excellent shot-blocker who shows a lot of agility on the court and someone who isn’t afraid to get physical for a basket or rebound. She isn’t stopping anytime soon, so expect big things out of her next season.
Janasia Wilson – G/F, Irvington
Wilson had quite the freshman season for Irvington, quickly emerging as the program’s top talent surrounded by a great supporting cast of superstars. She averaged 19.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG and a ridiculous 8.8 SPG, which is literally the definition of video game numbers. Wilson is an extremely pesky defender with incredible vision and a great feel for the game. Talk about being in the right place at the right time, but Wilson is someone who expects to be in that position, and being that assertive with that amount of competitive drive as a freshman is only going to help her at Irvington.
Heavyn Woods – G/F, West Side
Woods finished her high school career at West Side with a flourish during the 2021 season, forming a strong tandem with teammate Alana Nickels. She averaged 12.5 PPG, 8.3 RPG and 5.3 SPG this season, a strong guard with a great feel for the game and a seasoned veteran presence for West Side. Her leadership was a valuable commodity for the program and she was fantastic on the dribble drive, getting into the paint early and often. She made her living inside the perimeter and did it with authority, the cherry on top of a fantastic high school career.
Micha Iah Kingsberry – F/G, Irvington
Kingsberry has continued her great knack for rebounding into her sophomore season at Irvington, where she not only improved on the battle of the boards, but also became a much more dangerous scorer. She averaged 6.5 PPG, 7.7 RPG and 0.7 SPG during the 2021 season and was utilized on the offensive end a lot more often by her freshman teammate Wilson, mentioned above. Kingsberry showed a significant amount of growth from freshman to sophomore year, and if she continues on that route, she’ll be posting double-double averages soon.
