PGH NJ will now take a closer look at the Independence division, recapping some of the top players during the 2021 season.
Morgan Marshall – G/F, Montclair
Marshall burst onto the scene in a big way for Montclair, who topped the division, going 13-2 overall and a perfect 11-0 in divisional play. She averaged 22.5 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 5.3 SPG and one made three-pointer a game this season, one of two impact guards Montclair rolled out in its starting lineup in 2021. Marshall was versatile as both an interior and outside shooter. She showed off that she can shoot from long range, but can also make her living in the paint and inside the perimeter. Add on her stellar defense, not allowing any opponent to back her down, and you’re watching a superstar in the making for Montclair.
Janae Hall – G, Newark Collegiate
Hall made her senior season count in a big way for Newark Collegiate, averaging 16.7 PPG and 3.0 SPG in 11 games in 2021. She was the engine behind this team’s success, but also was a mentor to sophomore guard Syann Hightower, who will be headlining this team for the next several seasons. What a great mentor to have as Hall was a dynamic scorer, a dual-threat option with great interior skills and a quick, efficient release from the outside. Hall will be leaving a great legacy with Newark Collegiate and even with Hightower at the helm, they’ll be missing Hall in a big way next season.
Kahmiyah Napier – G, Newark East Side
Our second freshman on this list, Napier showed off that she is the complete package as a player, filling up the stat sheet game after game. She averaged 12.4 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 4.1 APG, 5.0 SPG, 1.1 BPG and 0.8 made threes a game last season. Napier has already shown that she’s incredibly comfortable with the basketball in her hands and welcomes the pressure of big situations. Along with being making a difference in big moments, she’s been a consistent scorer and a strong passer, which didn’t go unnoticed. That also goes for her defense as she’s been a steals machine. Expect big things from her over the next few seasons.
Shamaya Simola – G, Orange
Simola shined as a sophomore for Orange, a program that has a number of notable sophomore contributors. She averaged 11.4 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.3 APG and 4.9 SPG during the 2021 season leading Orange in scoring, assists and steals. She’s got fantastic shooters around her to facilitate the basketball to and great players in the interior that can help start a fast break which she’s often on the end of at the other side of the floor. Simola excels as a precision passer and an excellent on-ball defender at the point, while also controlling the game well from the point and getting the ball inside often, either from her or to a teammate. With some offseason work, she’ll be an all-around monster on the floor for Orange.
Diamonique Williams – F, Shabazz
Williams, despite being in her senior year at Shabazz, played just two seasons, and she made the most of her senior season, her best in her short high school career. She averaged 13.9 PPG, 17.8 RPG, 1.8 SPG and 1.0 BPG during the 2021 season, just an absolute beast on the boards. Williams was the unquestionable team leader this season, someone who made her time on the floor count on both sides of the ball. She quickly emerged as a superstar talent this season, making massive strides from an offseason where a few months ended up benefiting the senior forward.
