The 2021 Sunshine State Showdown kicked off the 2021 Travel Season in Florida this past weekend at the AdventHealth Fieldhouse in Winter Haven. The event welcomed some of the top teams both in Florida and nationally. Courtside Films took the action live all weekend and caught several of the event’s top players on video.
2022 Janiah Barker Janiah Barker 6'2" | SF Montverde Academy | 2022 State #3 Nation FL (Essence TipHayes Purple)
Barker showed why she is considered one of the country’s top prospects in the 2022 class displaying her versatility on the offensive end. She mainly played on the perimeter as a face up player knocking it down from 15 feet and putting the ball to the floor and going by her defenders off the dribble. While she mainly played face up, she recognized opportunities to slide down to the low post and score with her back to the basket when the matchup called for it. She is a dominant rebounder and often started the Fastbreak after grabbing a defensive rebound. She is long, athletic, versatile, and has a ton of potential and a very high ceiling.
2022 Sydney Bowles (Essence TipHayes Purple)
Bowles was impressive using her length, body and strength to be one of the weekends top players. She did a great job finishing at the rim over contact and around defenders. Based on the last time I had seen her play, she was one of the weekends most improved players showcasing a much impressive offensive perimeter game and a consistent scoring threat. She played tough and physical all weekend and her length and strength stood against the competition.
2022 Janay Quinn Janay Quinn 5'2" | PG Miami Sr. HS | 2022 State FL (Miami Suns Team Fowles)
Quinn was everywhere all weekend and got it done in a variety of ways. The small, quick combo guard is known as a penetrator and a pesty defender and while she did both those things on the weekend, it was her outside shooting that was on display in Miami Suns Team Fowles 4 games. The 2022 guards outside shooting helped her squad space the floor and open up penetration gaps for her and her teammates to then get to the rim. She is a new face to the EYBL circuit, having played the last few years with the Miami Suns South and was one of the weekends breakout stars!
2022 Sydney Shaw Sydney Shaw 5'9" | SG DME Academy | 2022 State FL (Miami Suns Team Fowles)
Sydney Shaw Sydney Shaw 5'9" | SG DME Academy | 2022 State FL was one of the weekends top scorers getting it done in a variety of ways. Her ability to change speed and take her defender off the dribble is impressive. Her hesitation move proved unstoppable, continuing to keep defenders off balance. And just as defenders begun to think they had her hesi move figured out, she hit them with a step back. Her offensive game was on display all weekend and she was fun to watch!
2024 Brianna Rivera (Hoop Dreams Elite)
Freshman Brianna Rivera put her outside shooting on display all weekend. The Lake Highland Prep star kicked off the travel ball season showcasing her quick release and deep range. Her Hoop Dreams Elite squad played a tough schedule, and she was consistent all weekend helping her team space the floor and set her up off penetrate and kick. She is one of the state’s top Freshman and has established herself as a consistent knockdown 3-point shooter with deep range!
