This past weekend the PGH Circuit took me to Louisville, Kentucky, and the MidAmerica Sports Center for the Derby City Duel. There were several Indiana teams there, along with several others from all over the South. Day-2 was a much shorter day, but below is a look at five ladies who I thought performed well on Sunday when I was able to see them play.
Kendal Taylor, 2023, 6-2 C, Concord H.S.
I caught Kendal in action a couple of times over the weekend, but when I saw her bright and early Sunday morning, she was a mismatch in her 8:00 a.m. game. She is a big, strong, physical post. She has good hands and does a solid job of keeping the ball high. She will establish herself on the block, and she understands how to get open whether you front her or play behind. Defensively, she provides a nice presence in the lane, and while she doesn’t seem to block a ton of shots, you know she’s there.

Sarah has been incredibly consistent all Spring, providing contributions at both ends of the floor. Defensively, she is an instinctive help-side defender who is always in position, and she does a nice job of rotating, walling up, and not fouling when helping. She will also pursue rebounds outside of her area. Offensively, she showed a little touch in the short-corners and mid-post Sunday, but when she’s around the block she has a tendency to sort of slither (for lack of a better word) around defenders and finish at odd angles.

Carrie filled in for an older team in her program this weekend, and she was consistent throughout the tournament, so I felt like she deserved a mention. She is a strong kid, quietly tough-nosed, and she plays with a nice motor. She just has a real business-like approach to the game, plus she possesses a good understanding/feel and has a nice all-around skillset. She shot the ball well when given any space, plus she handled it solidly against older girls, and she didn’t look the least bit intimidated playing “up”.

I’ve always enjoyed watching Morgan because I feel like she has a ton of upside, and I swear she grows an inch each week. She is incredibly long, fairly fluid athletically, and she’s starting to show signs of stronger play. I think once she’s finally done growing, she will become more explosive and you’ll see the strength kick in even faster. In the meantime, she did a really nice job of handling the ball, she can slice to the basket, and she has a nice-looking jumper. She is a versatile wing who does a little of everything.

Myla is someone who people in the Evansville area will get to know quickly. She is a long, fluid, and smooth guard who can flat out play. She has the ability to break down defenders and get to the basket, plus she has shown some touch outside when she takes rhythm shots. She has a nice handle and can run offense as well, but she’s a natural scorer who understands how and when to change directions, plus she can find open teammates through the smallest of windows. She will be an impact player as a Freshman.
