2022 5-9 PG Journey Armstead – Team Tulsa
Nobody distributed the ball better than Journey Armstead. The shifty playmaker led Team Tulsa to a semifinal appearance. Armstead dazzled with the ball, getting downhill and finding open teammates at the very last second once defenses collapsed. The lefty did a little bit of everything. She scored on drives to the basket but really excelled as a rebounder, sneaking her way into the paint for putbacks. In Game 1, she tallied 13 points, 4 rebounds, 10 assists and 2 steals in a 59-45 win over Illinois Elite National. In the semis, she tacked on 6 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals. Armstead is a guard that brings a different dynamic to the table.
2022 6-0 G Milica Matic – Texas Platinum Bruce
Matic was a big-shot maker for Texas Platinum. She hit timely jumpers in a semifinal win over the Wolverinas as she finished with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Matic has a good pull-up game and uses her elevation and height to shoot over defenders. Milica has a mature feel and can play 1-3. In the Platinum Championship, she scored a game-high 11. Expect the Serbian to draw plenty of attention moving forward.
2023 5-7 SG Ava Gugliuzza – Illinois Elite National
No space is needed for Ava Gugliuzza to get her shot off. Her lighting fast trigger is near automatic when not smothered. She hit 3 threes and finished with 22 points. Known for her three-point stroke, it was her aggressiveness toward the rim that really stood out. She craftily maneuvered her way to the hoop, drawing fouls in the process. Gugliuzza went 7-8 from the line. As she gets older and stronger, her game will continue to diversify.
2022 5-9 G Shakiria Chaney – South Georgia Angels
Lil Sis was a beast inside for South Georgia. The athletic guard did a bulk of her damage in the paint, outathleting opponents for rebounds as she used her bounce and quickness to secure loose balls. Chaney powered through contact and lived at the foul line. With her toughness and tenacity, she’s capable of playing nearly any position.
2022 6-1 C Sydni Smith – Team Tulsa
Battling Sydni Smith in the paint wasn’t for the faint of heart. Smith is a powerful rebounder and overall post presence that isn’t shy about using her strength to her advantage. She cleans the glass and carves out space with her elbows. Smith finished efficiently around the rim. What stood out for me was her vocal leadership on defense. She was the anchor, shouting out screens and making sure teammates knew where to be.
2023 5-8 W Destiny Buerge – Team Tulsa
Buerge was a consistent multi-level scorer on Sunday, averaging 15.5 points over two games. She was able to leak out in transition but also scored in the half court with a dangerous three-point shot. Buerge made an impact with her rebounding and defense.
2022 5-8 CG Claire Graham – Texas Platinum Bruce
I really like Claire Graham’s game. She’s got a strong body on the perimeter that can handle aggressive defense. Graham helps set up the offense, but really makes a difference playing off the ball when she can catch and shoot. Graham is an accurate three-point shooter that can create off the bounce when ran off the line.
2022 5-10 W Josie Storey – Shock 2022 Black
JoJo Buckets lived up to her name. She’s got a soft scoring touch that plays at all three levels. Josie stretches the floor with her three-point shooting and can beat defenders with her pull-up jumper from the mid-range. Around the rim she finishes with both hands.
2022 5-9 PG Alexsyah Goudeau – Shock 2022 Black
Smalls has some wiggle to her game. The reliable point guard has an in-and-out dribble and can get into the paint. Goudeau doesn’t need to score to impact games. She’s a very good decision maker that can get into the teeth of the defense and kick out to shooters. When she does decide to finish, Alexsyah has a strong gather and can play off two feet.
2022 5-10 G Megan Harrell – Illinois Inferno 2022 Elite Blue
The steady play of Megan Harrell helped Illinois Inferno to a second-place finish in the Gold Bracket. Harrell is a big guard that is patient with the ball. She lets plays develop and uses the bounce pass to feed open teammates in traffic. Harrell provided offense with her mid-range jumper and used her strength to protect the ball when facing pressure.
