PGH biggest event to date was all that and more. I had the pleasure to view it from both sides of the lens. Aside from the spectacular moves and deep three’s, there were some technically sound players.
Combo Guard
Molly Joyce, 2023, CY Select Wolves 2022 Alpha. Joyce had the ball on a string. Her ball handing skills were one of, if not the best during the tournament. A lefty is always a tough guard. Now add in the shiftiness, attacking off the dribble and finishing in the paint.
Egypt Johnson, 2022 FBC Nightmare 2022. Johnson was like a wrecking ball coming through the lane. She found her way to the cup practically every time she touched the ball. At a few times during games she bullied her way to the rim absorbing the contact and finished with an and one!
Summer Yancy, 2024, Della Lamb Red. Might have been, wait no, she was my favorite player to watch. Yancy was dynamic from start to finish, in every game. She can put the ball in the hole at a high clip. Attack the rim with a style not seen too much. Combination moves mixed in with step backs and add some deep threes for some extra flavor. Swagger was on a 100 and rightfully so.
Elauni Bennett, 2023, KC Run GMC 2022 UAA. Bennett reminded me of an old school guard that likes to post up. Remember when Ron Harper or Mya Moore would swing it to the wing, dive and post up like they were centers? Well that’s what Bennett did, especially against smaller guards.
Brianna Simpson, 2023, SD Network 16u. Simpson was always in attack mode. Offensively she is quick enough to get past defenders. Defensively she is strong and plays angles well. Finishes well through contact and knocked down threes consistently.
Yazmeen Whitsitt, 2024 Lady Martin Brothers Select, Whitsitt hit timely mid-range shots. She spaced the floor well with other shooters on her team. Used screens and flares effectively. Read the defense well to find the open shot.
Lucy Wolf, 2024, Lady Martin Brothers Select. At this level of basketball, you have to be able to shoot the rock. Wolf can let it fly. No matter if the shot was contested, wide open or rushed. It was money. Every time the ball left her hand it looked like it was going in. Pretty release and a quick trigger.
