Coming off winning the 2020 state championship, they surely have a target on their backs and to put it in the language of the young, they want “All the smoke.”
Led by the ultra-talented point guard Kendall McGee, this roster boasts several players poised to make noise at the next level. The Stars got off to an impressive start in the AAU State Prelims Friday night against Crossfire Tuslar. The swarming perimeter defense of McGee, Savannah Borowicz and Aubrey Starr gave the Crossfire guards fits, and when they were able to get into the lane, the front line consisting of Ella Keenan, and Samantha (Sam) Wills was there to pick up the slack.
McGee got the scoring started with a deep 3 from the wing and would hit another one a few possessions later to chip in 6 of the game’s first 8 points. She also showed why she is one of the best passers in her class as she broke the defense down and shoveled a nice no-look pass to Katie Kelzenberg to put the Stars up 12-0 forcing the Crossfire to spend a timeout to regroup.
The Stars opened the game on a 17-0 run before the Crossfire- a team that features the talented triplets Lexie Hanna, Addie Hanna and Bella Hanna of Maple Grove- was able to enter the scoring column from the free throw line. McGee led all scorers with 14 and the final score ended up 39-22, but the game was never really that close. The Stars would go on to finish 3-1 in the prelims, losing a very competitive game 42-39 to the rival Minnesota Fury Blue coached by Tim Peper.
McGee tweaked her knee Friday night and was never really able to get into a rhythm on the offensive end. Starr helped keep the Stars in it with her tenacious efforts on the boards, getting multiple offensive rebounds including a put back with the and-1. She would finish with 10 points to lead the Stars with Wills chipping in 8. The Fury had a balanced attack led by Jordan Ode Jordan Ode 5'11" | CG Maple Grove | 2025 State MN and Keegan McVicker, each finishing with 9.
The Fury had a lot of success moving without the ball, beating the Stars on backdoor cuts continuously in the first half leading to easy baskets at the rim. Addison Hoof was her usual disruptive self on the defensive end as she never gives up on a play and always seems to be in the thick of things. (Side note on Hoof, during a tournament down in Alabama a few weeks ago, immediately after finishing a game, she quickly changed out of her basketball shoes into her running shoes and went for a mile run. I don’t know many teenagers that run for fun, just shows you how dedicated she is.) She also chipped in 4 points on two impressive drives to the basket against the Stars. Hoof is a throwback point guard as she rarely looks for her own shot and makes it a point to get the ball into the hands of the playmakers.
The Stars figure to be at full strength once the State Championships roll around in two weeks, but will participate in the Lake Slam this weekend as a tune up. They asked for “All the smoke”, and the Fury answered the call. There may be another team or two that may have something to say about who is the best team in the 2025 class. All I have to say is get your popcorn ready and enjoy the show!
