Legacy Early College was the site for this past weekend’s LBI Southern Memorial Showdown in Greenville. Travel teams from SC as well as North Carolina and Georgia made the trek to the home of the Lions.
We at Prep Girls Hoops also made that same trek – and were excited that we did. Here are a few more from next year’s senior class that turned in impressive performances.
Sommer Joseph Sommer Joseph 6'2" | C Darlington | 2022 State SC – SC76ers 17U Premier – Darlington HS – It is only fitting if this season’s travel slate became the summer of Sommer. Joseph got plenty of minutes off the bench for coach Dozier’s SC76ers 17U Premier team and made the most of that time and then some. Listed at 6-foot-2 and a Queens (NC) commit who finished the 2020-21 season with All-State honors, she provided a post presence to her team on both ends of the floor in addition to lots of opportunities of high-percentage shots near the basket. Joseph provided a jolt to what is already a high-powered SC76ers offensive attack with a 10-point effort in a victory over Lowcountry Premier Ballers 17U.
Terranique Polite – Summerville HS – Lowcountry Premier Ballers 17U – Plenty of teams were swept up in Summerville’s Green Wave this past season and Polite proved to be a major reason why. She brings a high basketball I.Q. and court vision to a team as she can find herself and her team out of what looks like a tough defensive scenario an opponent is presenting – which can include double teams or a team switching defensive assignments while on the floor. Polite will take her fair share of 3-point attempts and give a team a rebounding boost. She is coming off a season where the Green Wave were one win shy of the 5A Lower State finals.
Ya’Niah Smith – Summerville HS – Lowcountry Premier Ballers 17U – Smith is another reason why the Green Wave presented at Summerville left many a team confused in its aftermath. She is extremely speedy at getting the ball up the floor and can find herself in the right place and the right time to haul in rebounds. In Lowcountry Premier Ballers’ contest with SC 76ers 17U Premier, she got the offense going for her team by providing her team’s first points. Smith provides vocal leadership as well as leadership by example as she is effective with the ball and getting to the rim as well as drawing contact to get to the free throw line. That quickness can be seen on both ends of the floor.
Mingaile Urmuleviciute Mingaile Urmuleviciute 6'4" | C Trinity Collegiate | 2022 State SC – Trinity Collegiate (Darlington) – SC76ers 17U Premier Speaking of players coming off seasons with teams that made deep postseason runs – Urmuleviciute is another one of those. Listed at 6-foot-4, that is a stature that gives teams an edge in terms of scoring near the rim, rebounding and shot blocking. Urmuleviciute will also make her free throws after absorbing fouls – as she did when she made a pair of freebies which gave her team an early 4-0 advantage in a game with Carolina Flames. Those were two of her seven points she scored in that win along with the four she got in another win over Lowcountry Premier Ballers 17U.
Anija Jones Anija Jones 5'9" | SG South Aiken | 2022 State SC – Denmark-Olar HS – SC Future 17U – Anija was all-around awesome at Aiken and those skills have translated well to the Vikings and then some. She has no problem trying 3-point shots. She is also a potent scorer in the midrange game as well. Jones also gets it done on defense by getting teams to turnover the ball with it winding up in her hands. She also provides a great deal of rebounding help along with shot blocking. Jones was the leading scorer in SC Future 17U’s Saturday morning game with Team Elite Next Generation 17U as she managed a 15-point outing.
Logan Jordan – A.C. Flora HS – SC Future 17U – AC’s very own LJ is making things happen in SC. And she will have one more season to make those things happen for her Falcons before entering the collegiate ranks. Jordan will knock down a number of 3-point and long 2-point attempts and can provide defensive assistance – either in the 1-on-1 game or with double teams. Jordan is always a possibility to force teams into turnovers and steal the ball – as she averaged an even two steals per contest this past season with A.C. Flora.
Jordan scored seven points in SC Future 17U’s game with Team Elite Next Generation SC 17U.
