Continue ReadingA lot can change in eight months, and it most certainly has since we last updated the Prep Girls Hoops rankings in October. Having survived the strangest of high school seasons, and now well into their final summer of AAU basketball, the Class of 2022 has been reshuffled entering the all-important July stretch run. There has been plenty of movement in the Top 30. Here’s a look at the players whose stock has risen.
Moving up in the Top 30
We’ve known for a very long time what Ellie Colbeck Ellie Colbeck 5'9" | PG Fergus Falls | 2022 State MN of Fergus Falls and Madison Mathiowetz Madison Mathiowetz 5'10" | CG Sleepy Eye St. Mary's | 2022 State MN of Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s could do in high school basketball, and we’ve seen them compete locally for their AAU clubs. This summer, though, both players took a big leap up in their level of AAU competition. Colbeck, from West Central United, and Mathiowetz, formerly of the Minnesota Rise, migrated to the top North Tartan squad to see how they would do against the very best competition around the country. It became clear quickly that the two South Dakota State University commits could be extremely effective. As a result, Colbeck has moved up three positions and into the Top 10 at #9. Mathiowetz also rises three spots to #12.
They weren’t the only players in the Top 20 to make a move up. Lily Fandre Lily Fandre 6'2" | SF Eagan | 2022 State MN of Eagan, who also moved to North Tartan EYBL this spring, has been outstanding against top competition. As a result, the Lehigh University commit rises four positions to #14. Likewise, Ronnie Porter Ronnie Porter 5'2" | CG Como Park | 2022 State MN of St. Paul Como Park and FBC Real is having an excellent year. The lightning-quick point guard moves up three places to #17.
The biggest riser in the Top 20 is Amber Scalia Amber Scalia 5'9" | CG Stillwater | 2022 State MN of Stillwater, who recently committed to the University of St. Thomas. Scalia has been a solid competitor for a long time, but this winter Amber took her game to a completely new level as she led the Ponies to an outstanding season. Her superior play has continued this summer with a move to the top Minnesota Fury UAA squad. We are probably guilty of undervaluing Scalia in the past, but Amber has made it clear now just where she fits in the 2022 pecking order. Thus, Scalia takes a gigantic leap forward, rising 18 positions and into the Top 20 at #19.
Also entering the Top 20 for the first time is Cambridge-Isanti guard Mikayla Aumer Mikayla Aumer 5'9" | CG Cambridge-Isanti | 2022 State MN , whose commitment to continuous improvement has been well-chronicled by Prep Girls Hoops over the past few seasons. Mikayla was dominant for the Bluejackets during the high school campaign as she continued to expand her game. As a result the Minnesota Metro Stars athlete rises five more positions to #20.
Elsewhere in the Top 30 we have three stock risers of note. Alayna Contreras Alayna Contreras 5'7" | CG Hopkins | 2022 State MN , who is Aumer’s teammate on Metro Stars 2022 3SSB, has just kept on getting better. Like Mikayla, Alayna has put in countless hours expanding her game, earning a her spot in the starting lineup for the mighty Royals. Contreras, who is now garnering Division 1 college interest, moves up three positions to #21.
Sneaking into the Top 30 for the first time are two dynamic guards who bring it every night out. Natalie Bremer Natalie Bremer 5'11" | CG Lake City | 2022 State MN is a scoring machine from Lake City, a true team leader with a gigantic motor. The Wisconsin Playmakers star, who recently committed to MSU-Mankato, rises four positions to #29. Also sneaking into the Top 30 for the first time is Adeline Kent Adeline Kent 5'8" | CG Becker | 2022 State MN of Becker, who was a key piece in the Bulldogs’ run to the Class 3A state high school championship. The Minnesota Stars Nilsen player, who has committed to the University of Tampa, moves up five spots to #30.
CLASS OF 2022 TOP 10
With the recent commitments of #3 Amaya Battle Amaya Battle 5'10" | PG Hopkins | 2022 State #29 Nation MN of Hopkins to the University of Minnesota, and #8 Kiani Lockett Kiani Lockett 5'9" | PG Minnetonka | 2022 State MN of Minnetonka to Creighton, every player in the Class of 2022 Top 10 has now made a college commitment. Remarkably, the top seven prospects in the Prep Girls Hoops rankings have signed on with high major programs. Coach Lindsay Whalen’s University of Minnesota Golden Gophers were the big winner in this class, snagging four players in the state’s Top 10: Battle, Mara Braun Mara Braun 5'11" | CG Wayzata | 2022 State #21 Nation MN of Wayzata, Mallory Heyer Mallory Heyer 6'1" | PF Chaska | 2022 State #36 Nation MN of Chaska and Nia Holloway Nia Holloway 6'0" | PF Eden Prairie | 2022 State #45 Nation MN of Eden Prairie.
