AAU teams from South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia all converged on the home of the Lions for the LBI Southern Memorial Showdown.
Here are a few more from the class of 2023 who stood out.
Jyahni Smith Jyahni Smith 5'7" | SG Grayson | 2023 State GA – Berkeley HS – Charleston Swarm 2022 – The Stags, one of the 16 teams as part of last season’s 5A tourney field, are poised to have a lethal duo the next couple of seasons between Smith and Peighton Jambor Peighton Jambor 6'2" | PF Berkeley | 2023 State SC , who is on the travel circuit this year with TMP. Smith can set up an offense in the half court and in true point guard fashion can find her way to the rim for two-point tries. She is someone who is quick on her feet, particularly on defense as her speed and footwork allow her to match any opposing ball carrier step for step and move for move. Smith has no problems stealing the ball and can make tough shots on the offensive end of the floor.
She scored 14 points in Charleston Swarm’s 49-33 win over Team Elite Next Generation SC.
Samaya Johnson Samaya Johnson 6'2" | C Keenan | 2023 State SC – Keenan HS – IDreams 17U – Any coach will tell you that there are plenty of things that can be coached – but one that is not one of those is having a big that is at least 6 feet as Johnson, listed at 6-foot-1 is. That enables one to rack up the number of blocked shots, as Johnson does. In IDreams 17U’s game with Team Elite 17U EYBL, she came off the bench and provided minutes for IDreams. Johnson will enter the 2021-22 season as a two-time state champion, having been part of the last two Raiders teams that have claimed SCHSL 3A hardware at season’s end.
Mary Kate Giordano Mary Kate Giordano 5'7" | SG Wade Hampton | 2023 State SC – Wade Hampton HS – SC Lady Sixers – Giordano is one of many in the high school sports scene who has a very busy athletics schedule between her basketball and volleyball play. In SC Lady Sixers’ game with CLT Lady Monarchs, Giordano did not have a foul called against her for the entirety of the contest. Giordano is another who keeps the ball in good hands and is on-point with her passes. Her shot selection includes taking a number of tries from long range – whether those are long twos or behind the 3-point arc.
Giordano finished with 17 points in SC Lady Sixers’ contest with CLT Lady Monarchs on Saturday.
Jaidah Liebert Jaidah Liebert 5'9" | SF Spring Valley | 2023 State SC – Spring Valley HS – SC 76ers 16U Select – There is an extremely talented junior-to-be that has made the basketball court at Spring Valley hers and anyone saying different is telling a lie(bert?). She displayed an ability to stand tough on defense – including in the interior. Liebert is also one who will give a team 3-point shooting depth. Defenses have to watch her every step of the way as she is very quick with the ball in her hands.
Liebert scored nine points in SC 76ers 16U Select’s game with Team Elite 16U EYBL. Six of those nine came in the second half of play.
