The LBI Southern Memorial Showdown was held at Legacy Early College in Greenville. Among those who made the trip were travel teams from three states in the latest stop for the 2021 AAU journey.
We at Prep Girls Hoops also made the trip to Greenville and were treated to a great deal of exciting basketball. Here is a look at a few more from the class of 2024 (plus one from the incoming freshman class of 2025) that showed up and showed out at the home of the Lions.
Alexandria Bennon Alexandria Bennon 5'7" | PG Christ Church | 2024 State SC – 2024 – Legacy Early College – SC76ers 16U Premier – If this weekend’s event was held at the home of the Lions, Bennon may have been considered by some to be the unofficial grand marshall given she knows Legacy Early backwards. Alexandria’s major element of her game is her passing as a classic “floor general” style of point guard. Along with that, Bennon will also haul in rebounds and provide plenty of defensive work – such as helping on defense with a teammate to create a double team to put an opposing ball carrier in an unenviable predicament. Bennon can also draw contact and get to the free throw line.
Navaeh West – 2024 – Dorman HS – Carolina Aces – North, south, east or west does not change the fact that the Cavaliers’ freshman is a name that is on the rise. Defensively, she makes it difficult for opposing ball handlers to successfully find their way to the basket with her in the way looking to stop that path. She does give a team a boost as a scorer as well as a rebounder. West will get plenty of contact and can drain tries from the free throw line. In her team’s game with Team Elite Next Generation, she only had one foul called against her while going two for two on free throw tries. All in all, she had six points that game.
Jenna Cothran Jenna Cothran 5'6" | SG Dorman | 2024 State SC – 2024 – Dorman HS – Carolina Aces – . Cothran is one who will give any team a healthy bit of defensive assistance. Scoring wise, she displays a potential to be able to hit shots from anywhere on the floor – including from behind the arc and at the basket in addition to midrange jump shots.
Ry’Naisha Barnes Ry’Naisha Barnes 5'7" | SF Denmark-Olar | 2025 State SC – 2025 – Denmark-Olar HS – SC Future 14U – This past season, Barnes was listed as one of two eighth graders for a Vikings team that got to within one victory of the SCHSL 1A Upper State finals. Barnes displayed impressive ball handling skills and shows prowess as a passer. Along with organizing her team’s half court offense, Barnes will try long range jumpers as well as weaving through defenders to the rim. That has the potential to mean getting bumped and getting to the free throw line.
There will be occasions on offense where she does not have the ball in her hands, but will signal to her team that she wants the ball – a clear display of confidence that coaches love to see in young players. In her team’s game with 1SC Elite 14U, SC Future trailed 8-0 early but only were behind by four (14-10) at the half thanks in large part to Barnes’ proficient play.
