Everyone competed hard in St. Thomas’ first camp as a DI school and there was no player who was out of place talent wise. Below are 10 standouts from this past Thursday with 10 more coming on Monday evening.

Johnson stood out early and often for her team as did many others who were grouped in with her. She showed some really nice skill with the ball and was smooth going to the rim. Johnson showed quite a bit of versatility on the defensive side of the ball as in scrimmaging she was switched out to guard the perimeter. She moves very well for her size and will only continue to get better as she matures. I was really impressed with her combination of foot speed and length for her size.

Kelley is a known commodity in Wisconsin and played really well throughout the spring. I wanted to see her be a little more aggressive at the camp to showcase her offensive ability and she did just that. I thought that she was able to get to the rim at will but was also able to knock down shot after shot from both the mid-range and the perimeter. She is ultra smooth with the ball and looks extremely comfortable with it in her hands. And as usual, she was a standout defender with her anticipation and quick hands.

I was curious to see how Dix would play in a much more free flowing environment from AAU and she really impressed. She’s a lot more mobile than I had initially thought and moves pretty well laterally. She did a fine job of guarding smaller players and was able to have her way on the offensive end at times. Dix has the ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter but also did a nice job of finishing at the rim with both hands. Over the past year she has also gained a ton of strength which is only going to help her going forward.

Mallegni might have been the player that caught my attention the quickest at the camp as early on in the drills she could not miss. She has a good looking shot and was able to get shots to fall consistently throughout scrimmaging as well. She was able to get to the rim and shoot the ball which made her a really dynamic threat for her team. She makes it look easy on the floor and at times she looked like a seasoned veteran. I think the think I was most impressed from her was her lateral quickness, you don’t see that often with a player of her stature.

Poole was impressively getting to the rim all day long and did a fantastic job of creating separation between her and the defender. She showed really nice court vision and IQ with the ball in her hands as well and excelled in the transition game. Poole was a kid who just didn’t make many mistakes while making good plays after good plays. I thought that her ability to get others involved stood out pretty heavily as well, especially in a camp setting where sometimes passing the ball isn’t prevalent.

Steingraber is not a flashy player by any means but she certainly gets the job done at a high level. I thought that she showed some athleticism and just a lot of overall toughness at the camp. She was able to get to the rim and score the ball and looked really comfortable while running drills. She plays with quite a bit of grit to her game and is always going to be one of the toughest players on the floor. Steingraber also has some really nice skill with the ball and has the ability to put it on the floor well.

Holmgren is a very solidly built guard who really stood out on the defensive side of the ball. She has a really solid base with good instincts with the ball. At times she seemed like she was a step ahead of others on the floor and was able to put it on the floor nicely. Defensively she was very solid as well with her strength. She was able to guard bigger players with no problem with her strong lower base. Proved to be a very versatile guard at the camp who you just notice while watching the game.

Scalia was her typical self at the St. Thomas camp as she made good decisions with the ball, shot it very well, got others involved, and finished at a high level around the rim. I know Scalia mostly as a shooter and thought that her ability to get to the rim in a quick paced setting was very solid. She finished in multiple ways around the rim with both hands and had the ability to get a bucket whenever she wanted. Really good ball movement on offense as well from her as I thought the ball zipped out of her hands.
Emily Galvan

– 2022 – 5’6 PG – Chicago Hoops Express – Rolling Meadows (IL)
Galvan caught my attention quickly in 3 vs. 3 play with how many good shots she was taking, and more notably, how many she was making. She didn’t seem to be forcing the ball much and was a consistent force on the offensive end. She’s really smooth with the ball in her hands and was able to get her teammates into good spots to score the ball. Her ball handling and game processing stood out very quickly as they went through skill work.

– 2024 – 6’4 C – Team Wisconsin Hebert – Altoona (WI)
Wirth was probably the top true post at the elite camp and while it is hard for post players to stand out in a camp setting, Wirth had no problem standing out. She was able to run the floor well and I thought that she was able to get really good position on the inside. Defensively, she was very good knocking away entry passes and blocking shots. Wirth did a really good job of getting wide when posting up and giving the entry passer a big target. She’s not close to her upside yet and that is scary with how solid she is already.
