June is a big month for rankings throughout the Prep Girls Hoops Network, and for the Class of 2023, it marks the transition from underclassman to upperclassman for those ladies entering their Junior years of high school. On the whole, the 2023 list expanded from 150 prospects to 175 prospects, and there was some movement throughout the entirety of the list. As it relates to the 2023 point guard group, there are 33 ladies who have acquired a spot within the Top-175, and two of them are new to the list on PGH Indiana. With a full Spring season “in the books” for the first time since 2019, it helped to provide more clarity as to who the better prospects are throughout the state. Below is a look at those 33 prospects, as well as some added information and analysis of the newcomers, plus a handful of additional girls who have stood out since our last rankings update in March.
Newcomers
As it relates to the Class of 2023, a 25-player expansion is part of the emphasis with regards to our Summer rankings. As we expanded from 150 to 175 prospects, two young ladies at the point guard position are new to the rankings list this time around. They are highlighted below, and if you know them, I think you’d agree they belong here.
Avery Patterson Avery Patterson 5'4" | CG Bloomington North | 2023 IN , Bloomington H.S. North – Avery has always been a tough-nosed, gritty, hard-working little guard who shoots the ball very well from the perimeter. However, this Summer she is taking on a lot more ball-handling responsibility, and she’s doing a nice job of playing more of a traditional point guard role. She transferred in from Brown County last year and should add to the Cougars backcourt depth.
Hannah Ruddle Hannah Ruddle 5'7" | PG Homeschooled | 2023 State IN , Homeschooled – I saw Hannah for the first time in mid-April, and she is a really nice point guard prospect with a little bit of everything. She has length, speed and quickness, and she plays with a motor. She is good in transition, she can get to the basket and create for herself or others, plus she can knock down an open rhythm jumper. I also like her efforts at the defensive end of the floor.
Keep an eye on…
Tori Allen Tori Allen 5'9" | CG Andrean | 2023 State IN , Andrean H.S. – Tori began the 2020-2021 high school season on fire, finishing with a 13.9 ppg scoring average, while shooting 44% (44-101) from 3-point range. As this Spring has worn on, she has really found her stroke, oftentimes knocking down four or five 3-pointers in a game. But what’s been most impressive is her adjustment to pressure as a primary ball-handler and her efforts defensively.
Lauren Barker Lauren Barker 5'5" | CG Columbus North | 2023 State IN , Columbus North H.S. – Lauren is a tough-nosed little guard who plays with a great motor. She is strong for her size, she has solid speed and quickness, and she is a very good perimeter shooter. This Spring, she has done a really nice job of getting into the heart of the defense and drawing contact/free throw attempts. She still plays both guard positions, but I think she’ll be a point guard in college.
Abby Fleetwood Abby Fleetwood 5'9" | PG Indian Creek | 2023 State IN , Brown County H.S. – Abby is another player who put together an outstanding 2020-2021 high school season. Those efforts have carried over to the Spring, as she’s contributing in a variety of ways for a very good travel team. She is a nice shooter/scorer with some range, she can slice to the basket and finish, but she also has good all-around skill and can run offense or find open teammates.
Ella Hobson Ella Hobson 5'4" | PG Center Grove | 2023 State IN , Center Grove H.S. – The last couple of Summers Ella played “up” two age groups. She was used more off the ball because of her ability to shoot it accurately, and with deep range. But this Spring she has shown a good handle, creativity off the bounce, and the ability to find/make shots at all three levels. She’s also breaking down the defense and finding teammates, plus she’s a feisty defender.
RaShunda Jones RaShunda Jones 5'7" | PG South Bend Washington | 2023 State IN , South Bend Washington H.S. – RaShunda has quickly ascended into the position of being an elite prospect/recruit, and she’s one who is worth the price of admission. The amount of growth she’s shown skillfully indicates how coachable she is, and how hard she works at it. She’s become a consistent shooter, a dynamic ball-handler, and a high-level defender, with elite speed and quickness.
Kamryn Washington Kamryn Washington 5'7" | PG University | 2023 IN , University H.S. – Kamryn has always been an intriguing prospect to me because of her length, quickness, and creativity. She transferred in from Warren Central last Summer, but she had to play Junior Varsity. Look for her to be a big piece of the Trailblazers success in 2021-2022, though, she still has some time to impress this Summer. She makes a lot of plays off the bounce, plus she can defend.
