Memorial Weekend 2021 was the conclusion of the very first Prep Girls Hoops Circuit. There were three regional finals spread across the country, with Fishers High School in Central Indiana playing host to the Victory Region Finals. All of the teams in attendance were from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee. I was tasked with covering the entire 16U Division, so I wanted to take the time to highlight those players who stood out throughout the weekend. Congratulations to the Tennessee Sol Black squad for winning the 16U title, and for being the only team ending the weekend unscathed (6-0). S.W.I.S.H. City had a strong weekend as well, finishing just five points shy as the tournament Runners-Up. Team Firstep (3-1), IGB (4-1), and Indiana Showcase (3-1) each finished the weekend with just a single blemish on their records.
1st Team All-Victory Region Finals
Emiyah Cobb, 2023, 5-7 PG, Clarksville Northwest H.S. (TN), Tennessee Sol Black
– Emiyah continued the strong play I saw from her in Louisville a little less than a month ago. She is a dynamic playmaker who is quick with the ball. She is a blur in transition, she does a nice job of understanding when to finish or find teammates, plus she uses her great length to cause problems defensively.
Emma Filiatreau, 2023, 6-1 PF, Bethlehem H.S. (KY), Team Firstep
– Emma is a skillful inside-out front-liner who does a little of everything for her team. She has the size and strength to score at the basket, she is a solid all-around athlete attacking from the mid-post, plus she knocks down the occasional 3-pointer as well. Emma plays with a nice motor and battles defensively.
Autumn Rucker, 2023, 5-8 SF, Pike H.S. (IN), Indiana Showcase
– Autumn has come into her own this Spring, and Saturday she had one performance that stood out above most from any girl over the weekend. She is a talented athlete with a solid frame, and when she gets going downhill, she’s tough to stop. Her perimeter skill has improved, plus she can defend a number of positions.
Amber Tretter, 2023, 6-1 PF, Forest Park H.S. (IN), S.W.I.S.H. City
– Amber has about as much upside as any frontline player who was in the 16U Division over the weekend. She is incredibly long, very bouncy, and fluidly athletic. Right now she’s more of a mid-post forward who can also play around the basket, but she has some touch outside, and could become a full-time perimeter ‘4’.
Imari Berry, 2024, 5-10 SG, Clarksville H.S. (TN), Tennessee Sol Black
– Imari has a lot of upside, and it’s just a matter of time before she reaches that potential. She is incredibly long, she can run and jump, and she just has a smooth floor game that translates well to the next level. She can put it on the floor and attack the basket, she has a soft touch outside, and she’s an effective defender.
2nd Team All-Victory Region Finals
Asia Cochran, 2022, 5-7 PG, Westfield Preparatory H.S. (MI), Hype Athletics Red
– Asia is a really nice talent with an athletic frame. She plays with a great motor and flies around the floor making plays at both ends. She can also score it in bunches, whether that’s to the rim or from outside.
Devyn Barton, 2023, 5-6 PG, Castle H.S. (IN), S.W.I.S.H. City
– Devyn is a high-motor, downhill, attacking point guard. She uses more angles and power than most kids you’ll see at the position, and she’s physical and aggressive to the basket. Her touch outside has also improved.
Brooklyn Cann, 2023, 5-6 CG, Elizabethtown H.S. (KY), Team Firstep
– Brooklyn struck me as a high IQ, highly skilled guard who just has a nice feel for the game. She is a very good perimeter shooter, so you can’t give her space, but she can also handle it and run offense efficiently.
Emily Mattingly, 2023, 5-10 SG, Evansville Memorial H.S. (IN), IGB
– Emily has shown the ability to attack the basket this Spring, but it was her accuracy from outside that stood out this weekend. She has also done a nice job of turning into a quality defender who understands angles well.
Ashlee Schram, 2023, 6-3 C, Tipton H.S. (IN), IGB
– Ashlee is one of the more skilled posts you will see at this size. She has great hands, nice touch, and she is very well-balanced and coordinated offensively. She was also very physical controlling the boards.
3rd Team All-Victory Region Finals
Faith Carson, 2023, 6-4 C, Buchanan H.S. (MI), UTS Elite
– One of the most imposing “bigs” this weekend, she controls the paint each game, plus she’s skilled.
Macy Runner, 2023, 5-7 CG, Nelson County H.S. (KY), Overtime Performance-1
– Long, fluid combo guard has point guard skill and touch around the perimeter; has a nice overall feel.
Grace Stapleton, 2023, 5-5 PG, Eastern Hancock H.S. (IN), Indiana Showcase
– Extremely hard-working kid who can handle it and play point, but she’s also a dangerous shooter.
Ayla Starck, 2023, 6-0 PF, Apex Friendship H.S. (NC), ABC Lightning Performance
– Showed a nice, strong, physical game, combined with good skill and solid touch to the 3-point line.
Staci Williams, 2023, 5-6 PG, Holly Springs H.S. (NC), ABC Lightning Performance
– Quick, fast, and athletic point guard, likes to get downhill immediately, and draws a lot of FT trips.
