Continue ReadingAfter a brief time away, Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey is back to take a look at the NJ Shoreshots, an elite AAU program essentially composed of the best of the best in New Jersey’s Shore Conference.
We’ve had the ability to talk about the program inside-and-out, going through the 15U-17U teams, but we’re back for our second go-around as there’s plenty more talent to talk about.
We’re starting once again with the 17U team, going back to the tape to see what makes these players stand out on paper and in person.
Our first player in this article is rising junior Emma Carman, a 6-0 versatile option from Red Bank Catholic. The first thing that stood out when watching her is the utilization of her size to her advantage, especially when working in the paint.

She makes it tough for opponents to get shots off when she’s on defense and has great shot-blocking ability when the time comes.
She’s also racking up points and rebounds on offense as she’s bullying her way through defenders to crash the boards or go up for the tough two. Carman already has shown a level of maturity and confidence on the floor, and that’s only going to exponentially increase over time.
Over in the guard position, 5-9 rising junior Maggie Cavanaugh from St. Rose, and looking at her highlights this summer, one play really stands out that showcases several facets of her game.
Had so much fun at the NJ Showcase! Can’t wait for this weekend at the DMW Summer Warmup! @CoachTinyGreen @bobdubina @MBHoops10 @traceysabino13 @SRHSGIRLSBB @ShoreshotsGirls pic.twitter.com/EDR78ga2fg

She was trailing the break, but found an open lane to get into the middle, and got the attention of her teammate, who passed her the ball, and with several opponents surrounding her, Cavanaugh had the awareness to pass it to an open teammate on the wing for the basket.
Her awareness and passing on the floor, plus her agility and shooting, which wasn’t showcased in this specific play, but is a major plus to her game, has allowed her to become a well-rounded player.
Talking about her shooting more, she’s a great perimeter shooter, excelling from the wing and adding in a strong midrange game to round things out.
Our final player we’ll be talking about in this article is rising senior Katherine Martini, a 6-1 forward from Holmdel who is the second-tallest player on the 17U roster this summer. She’s very mobile and agile for a forward and isn’t someone who’s just patrolling under the basket.

Martini has a strong mid-range game and a smooth turn-around, which she’ll pull out on her opponents to create separation and utilize her size more as she becomes nearly impossible to guard by that point.
She tracks opponents well on defense, moving with the ball. That features really well in man-to-man defense where she’s having to spread the floor a lot more instead of a zone where she would be more static.
Martini has all the tools of a stretch five at her disposal and that really allows her to be utilized in more versatile roles that makes her even more of a dynamic player.
As the summer rolls on, we’ll be continuing to find more and more players in the AAU circuit, so stay tuned for more.
