The shooting guard position is pretty solid at the top and then it is really deep with small college prospects as there are only four shooting guards ranked in the Top 30 players. There are sure to be some changes, maybe drastic changes, in the months ahead. You can view our previous positional breakdowns here: Point Guards, Below I take a look at some of the shooting guards that are ranked within the first edition of the 2024 rankings.
The top ranked player in Iowa’s 2024 class is Aili Tanke Aili Tanke 6'0" | SG Johnston | 2024 State IA . The 5’10 shooting guard had a great freshman campaign with Johnston High School and carried that over into the AAU slate as she performed very well playing up on All Iowa Attack’s 16U EYBL team, a team that won a national championship. Tanke is a big guard who can handle the ball and defend, but I think my favorite trait about her game is the ability to play the guard spot or be a mismatch problem at the wing or stretch-4 position. She has already committed to Iowa State as she was the first player in Iowa to commit in the 2024 class. After Tanke you have Sioux City East guard Alexandra Flattery Alexandra Flattery 5'10" | SG Sioux City East | 2024 State IA . Flattery is ranked at the #7 spot overall and has a ton of upside. She’s a rally smooth guard who holds a lot of athleticism and uses it to her advantage really well. I like her motor on the defensive end and she shows really good anticipation skills. Flattery still has some development to do but once she reaches her ceiling she is going to be really good.
While those two players are the only off-ball guards in the Top 10, just have two more guards at #17 and #28 who are going to really have an impact on their high school teams over the next few years. Lucy Wolf Lucy Wolf 5'7" | SG Iowa City West | 2024 State IA of Iowa City West is #17 on our Top 100 and she has a chance to really step in at Iowa City West and impact their team this year in a big way. She’s a smooth and fluid guard who has really impressed me over the past year with her offensive ability. She can still get much better on the offensive side of the ball which is dangerous if she does. Wolf is going to be a really tough player to stop this winter. Kayla Reis Kayla Reis 5'7" | PG Dallas Center-Grimes | 2024 State IA of Dallas Center-Grimes is #28 on our list and she is a sharpshooter who didn’t see any varsity time last year on a loaded roster. This year should be different as her shooting ability should help her team out in spurts. She has the ability to knock down multiple shots every game and if she gets hot, you can’t stop her very easily. I want to see her be able to score the ball efficiently this year.
There are a ton of candidates as you look across the shooting guards in the rankings to make a big jump in the update this winter. #39 Emma Townsley Emma Townsley 5'7" | PG Benton | 2024 State IA of Benton is a player who I thought showed really good flashes last year but I want to see her become just a little more efficient with the ball. She has a lot of talent surrounding her so it should be able to open her up for some easy looks at the basket. I also really like the game of #46 Mya Bunkers Mya Bunkers 5'7" | SF Remsen St. Marys | 2024 State IA of Remsen St. Marys. She’s an extremely athletic and slender guard who uses her length really well. If she has another good campaign, I think that she’ll quickly rise up the rankings.
There are also quite a few players who I like in the back quarter of the Top 100. Players such as #74 Jadyn Sharar Jadyn Sharar 5'7" | SG Montezuma | 2024 IA of Montezuma, #77 Mila Van Weelden Mila Van Weelden 5'9" | SG Marion | 2024 State IA of Marion, and #100 McKenna Sievers McKenna Sievers 5'4" | SG Newell-Fonda | 2024 State IA of Newell-Fonda are three players who have already shown the ability to impact their teams in a positive way. All three are players who play a role for their respective team, and they play it well, but I would like to see them take a step forward this year. They will all three have the opportunity to do so with some graduations that their teams had this year. I think that all of these players have a good chance to move up 10 or more spots if they play like I think they are capable of this upcoming season.
