This weeks’ recap includes both players and three other athletes who have been consistent performers for their team.
Samantha Smith-2023-St. Gertrude High School
Samantha is a high IQ player, excellent passer and can knock down the open shot. With St. Gertrude being without two of their starters, Samantha stepped up big for her team, controlling the flow of the game and making the right plays to get her team in scoring position. She works hard on both ends of the court, applies defensive pressure to ball handlers creating turnovers. She has great court vision, her head is always up scanning the floor and knows where to deliver the ball. Samantha is a true point guard, puts her team first and doesn’t force or take bad shots.
Kate Samson-2022-St. Gertrude High School
US Naval Academy commit, team leader and performed well this week. At 6’3 she takes a lot of hits in the post that don’t get called. She does a great job holding onto the ball, several times on rebounds she was getting knocked around by smaller guards and maintained possession of the ball. She keeps the ball high and makes solid outlet passes to her guards. Kate is a true post and does her offensive work in the paint. St. Gertrude’s guards do a good job relocating on post entry passes, she has good vision and finds them for open jumpers. Kate gets good position in the post and finishes consistently around the basket; made a couple mid-range jumpers and blocked plenty of shots.
Jaedyn Cook Jaedyn Cook 6'3" | C John Marshall HS | 2023 State VA -2023-Henrico High School
Jaedyn has great size at 6’3 and a strong, physical body. Defensively, she has good timing and is a high level shot blocker. Offensively, she is a low post threat but her game is not confined to the paint. She can score in a variety of ways, from the high to low post and has a consistent mid-range shot. She is able to put the ball on the floor attacking the basket or pulling up baseline for short jumper. During this summer league, I have not had the opportunity to see her shoot the 3 ball. Jaedyn continues to improve each game, she is ready to have a dominant season for Henrico High School.
Eliza Cochran-2025-St. Catherine’s High School
Good athlete, she runs the floor hard rim to rim. She defends the post well, gets good positioning and can also guard the perimeter. With her length at 6′ and mobility, she can guard positions 3-5. Eliza takes no plays off, she is a strong rebounder on both ends of the court. Consistently finishes in the paint, can put the ball on the floor from mid-range and get to the basket. Showed glimpses of nice post moves and can shoot from the mid-range. Eliza has a strong foundation going into the high school season and should only improve as the year progresses.
Katie Honaker-2023-Godwin High School
Katie has improved her skill set each year. She stands at 5’11, is active on the boards and has range to the 3pt line. Katie is best suited as a 3/4, her size is an advantage over smaller guards. She can see over top of the defense to make easy passes in the post or to break the press. Her quickness and agility in the post allows her to maneuver around bigger players with ease. She is a solid finisher and can score through contact.
