Although I didn’t get to watch every team, I was still treated to some brilliant individual performances.
With that in mind, here are some of the best prospects from the tournament:
Madi Lumsden | 2023 | 5’8’’ Combo Guard | True Texas Hoops 2023 Crabtree | Argyle HS – Lumsden was the best three-point shooter I saw on Saturday. The Argyle guard buried triples off the dribble and from the catch, and looked great creating her shots and getting them off in rhythm. If she was given even the slightest cushion, she was going to let it fly from deep, knocking down four threes in the second half of her afternoon outing. Beyond her shooting, Lumsden looked smooth when navigating the floor and operating as the ball handler in pick and roll scenarios. She is a hidden gem who could make some noise during the upcoming high school season.
Ashna Tambe Ashna Tambe 5'7" | CG Hockaday | 2024 State TX | 2024 | 5’7’’ Shooting Guard | Texas Elite 16U 3SSB | Hockaday HS – Tambe was fabulous from mid-range. She got it done with pull ups and when spotting up. The Hockaday two-guard showcased her ability to hit off-balanced jumpers from a variety of spots. She also has a nice floater in her arsenal she can go to when getting past defenders. She looked comfortable creating for herself and scoring off the ball. Additionally, she was willing to make the extra pass on the perimeter and assisted on baskets via some nice bounce passes to cutting teammates.
Taylor Haggan Taylor Haggan 5'11" | PF John Paul II | 2023 State TX | 2023 | 5’11’’ Power Forward | Team Lex Nation | John Paul II HS – Haggan’s offensive versatility was on full display Saturday. The 2023 forward stretched the floor with her soft shooting touch from mid to long-range. She absorbed and finished through contact to convert three-point plays at the foul line too. Her scoring in the paint both off the dribble and when posting up combined with her spot up shooting makes her an absolute weapon. I’m excited to see what she can do with JPII this upcoming season.
Salese Blow Salese Blow 5'10" | SF Vines | 2023 State TX | 2023 | 5’10’’ Combo Guard | Texas Platinum 16U Walker | Plano Senior HS – Blow possesses good length and fantastic athleticism. She can produce as both a guard and as a wing at both ends of the floor and is a true two-way prospect who really gets after it on defense. The Plano Senior junior is a ferocious on-ball defender who moves her feet and pesters opponents from start to finish. On offense, Blow had success as a slasher, slicing through traffic and displaying outstanding body control and finishing ability when attacking the basket off the dribble. She was very good as a sophomore for her high school team, and I believe she could take another leap forward this year.
Torie Sevier | 2023 | 6’3’’ Center | True Texas Hoops 2023 Crabtree | Denton Braswell HS – Sevier’s size allowed her to dominate the glass at both ends. She was extremely productive as a rebounder, especially on defense, virtually eliminating opposing teams from getting any second-chance opportunities. Furthermore, her height and length helped her to challenge and alter shots when protecting the rim. The Braswell center also showed that she is a sneaky good distributor, standing in the middle of zone defenses and surveying over the top to find open teammates. While Sevier is still a bit raw, her upside is tremendous.
Kennedy Evans Kennedy Evans 5'11" | SG Legion Prep Academy | 2024 State TX | 2024 | 5’11’’ Shooting Guard | ProSkills 16U | Denton Braswell HS – Evans is a two-way guard and is one of those players whose effort is never in question. She gets down into a stance and works her tail off on defense. The 2024 prospect played with great energy at both ends, showing no quit even when her team trailed late in a game on Saturday. She hit a big three in the closing minutes of her teams’ first matchup of the weekend and helped them fight back from a double-digit deficit. They ultimately suffered a one-point loss, but her hustle and determination to continue playing hard despite the score really impressed me. In addition, she contributed on the defensive boards.
Marlee Moynagh | 2022 | 5’2’’ Shooting Guard | True Texas Hoops 2022 | Ponder HS – Moynagh came off the bench for her squad and provided them with a huge boost. She drilled a pair of catch-and-shoot threes when her team desperately needed some points, helping them to stay connected after falling behind early in the contest. The Ponder guard made a nice cut off the ball to get a gimme layup as well, finishing the first half with eight points. Players who can come off the bench and immediately make an impact are extremely valuable, and Moynagh showed that she can do exactly that.
