I had a chance to catch the Cy Fair HS Fall Tournament this weekend, to say I was drained going in would be an understatement because on Friday night, my daughter, Sydney Colson, was inducted into the Texas A&M Hall Of Fame so maybe 10 hours sleep yet the intensity from many of the teams got my adrenaline going and I wanted to start with some freshmen standouts
Bree Riley Bree Riley 5'6" | PG Grand Oaks | 2025 State TX (Grand Oaks HS)
Riley attacks the rim smoothly yet quickly and her deceptive first step is one of the reasons, well so is her explosive first step because she understands how to keep the defender guessing and watching her play against older players, some on their way to the next level and not missing a beat showed me a lot. Yeah I knew she could play, I knew she could shoot but she did it under pressure against older players
Margan Allen Margan Allen 5'7" | SG Legacy SSS | 2025 State TX (Grand Oaks HS)
Allen’s nickname is NuNu which is perfect because every time I catch her, seems like she’s showing me something new or has added something new to what she could already do. Her pull-up jumper is smooth and consistent, she understands how to set the defender up and just drops it with a hand in her face but the heat she applied on defense also was nice, again, it was against older players so that speaks volumes
Victoria Morris (Cy Lakes HS)
Morris is 6’4 with a “college-ready body” and if that doesn’t grab your attention off the top, wait, I’m not a novice so what she’s doing now, with her size and strength are sending me messages on what she will become and that is a dominant force on the inside. She has good hands and feet and she “goes after the ball” off the rim, she runs the floor on both ends and can step outside of the paint and play defense. She also scores off of putbacks, unlimited upside
Chandler Caver Chandler Caver 5'9" | CG Hightower | 2025 State TX (Hardin-Jefferson HS)
Caver surprised me, no, not with her skillset, because I didn’t know she was and the maturity has definitely played a part as she’s grown a little as well as gotten stronger but after the first jumper, I had to look at the roster and I just shook my head. She’s hungry and playing on a team with the best player in Texas, Ashlon Jackson Ashlon Jackson 5'10" | SG Hardin Jefferson | 2022 State #22 Nation TX , definitely helps as she grasps things from her causing but her poise on both ends of the floor is nothing I haven’t seen before but I visualize the storm that’s coming
Chaney Spencer Chaney Spencer 5'8" | SG Lake Creek | 2025 State TX (Lake Creek HS)
Spencer for Hire is probably appropriate because I love new faces that just get the job done and on opening day, I glanced at her from afar throwing pinpoint passes as well as taking defenders off the dribble yet I was trying to see as many teams as possible and she was on the day 2 “to-see” list and after I did, I glanced at the roster and saw she was a freshman and I was thinking, OMG, she is going to be one of the top PG’s in Texas before it’s all said and done
Andrea Sturdivant Andrea Sturdivant 5'6" | SG Fort Bend Austin | 2025 State TX (Fort Bend Austin HS)
Sturdivant is one of those players I loved to see early because she reminded me of myself and Bonecrusher “Never Scared” and that was when she was in the 5th grade going against high school players. Let me start with she’s one of the fastest players, with the ball, in the area, that’s under control, that in itself speaks volumes but her explosive speed ties into her defense as she applies so much heat that turnovers galore come out of it. On the flip, she sets the defender up nicely, just back off because she is going by you in the half or open court but her upside is scary
Melanie Hodges (Langham Creek HS)
Hodges gave a lasting first impression just by her poise as well as presence on the court. She’s a shade under “the magic number” which is 6’0 and her desire to show she belonged just set it off almost immediately. She rebounded well and more importantly, she went after the ball of the glass yet she also showed her physicality on both ends as she not only gave it but she took it and when she got the highlight block, if I was a photographer I would have it on the cover, yet I’m only an evaluator and her future is bright
