Over 60 players participated in the Coming For That Number One Spot Showcase this past weekend. Broken down into two sessions by graduation class, we were in the house for day 1 of the showcase. Here are some of the guards that stood out to us.
2022 Aspen Johnson Aspen Johnson SF Seminole Ridge | 2021 State FL 5’11 Guard (Seminole Ridge)
Johnson was one of the most impressive players at the showcase. At 5’11 she is a big, strong, physical guard who is a very consistent and skilled offensive player. She did a good job attacking off the dribble with an explosive first step and shifty 1on1 moves displaying several combo moves off the dribble. She was crafty at the rim, finishing around a variety of ways, and crashed the boards hard from the perimeter. She was active on defense and projects as a mid major D1 prospect and is one of the state’s top uncommitted 2022 prospects.
2024 Danika Ballard 5’8 Guard (Boone High School)
Ballard knocked down a several open 3-pointers in 5v5 play. She has good range with a quick release and shoots a high percentage both off the catch and off the dribble. She was very active defensively stepping into the passing lanes for several steals and attacking in transition. She was effective in transition, pushing the tempo when she could, breaking down defenders with her open court moves and dropping dimes to her teammates for easy baskets. Ballard stood out with her decision making and consistently having her head up when handling ball in transition taking outlet passes and turning them into easy buckets.
2023 Eleecia Carter Eleecia Carter 5'7" | CG Lake Highland Prep | 2023 State FL 5’9 Guard (Lake Highland Prep)
Carter is one of the top shooters in the state of Florida, displaying that throughout the high school season with Lake Highland Prep and this spring / summer with Central Florida Elite. At the event, Carter showcased her overall offensive game as a quick, skilled ball handler with is long and athletic. She is a consistent offensive threat who is capable of scoring at the rim, from mid-range and shoots the 3 at a high percentage. Defensively she is a quick, active defender who is aggressive and a good on ball defender.
2023 Bre’asia Washington Bre’asia Washington 5'5" | CG Winter Haven | 2023 State FL 5’5 Guard (Winter Haven High School)
I had yet to see Washington play before this weekend end left impressed. She is a strong, explosive guard, who is an active defender, and proved her ability to get to the rim off the dribble. She has a quick first step and her body type and strength allow her to take contact at the rim and still finish.
2023 Tyra Kennedy Tyra Kennedy 5'6" | CG Brooks DeBartolo | 2023 State FL 5’7 Guard (Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate School)
I was impresses with Kennedy’s ability to knock down the open 3 this summer with the Miami Suns. This weekend I was able to see more of her overall game. She is a quick, athletic combo guard who can handle the ball, knock down open shots, and extremely active on defense! She was one of the more well-rounded players on both sides of the basketball this weekend.
