With a freshman season under their belts, basketball fans across the Palmetto State are waiting with anticipation to see what their sophomore campaigns have in store. The PGH Top 250 Expo was loaded with lots of talent and lots of great basketball.
Who were among those who shined as part of that 2024 class? Here is a look at who caught our eye.
Danasia Wright Danasia Wright 5'10" | SF Lake Marion | 2024 State SC – Lake Marion HS (Santee) – Wright has shown glimpses of being a potential noteworthy scorer, but it is her passing where her game really turns heads and raises eyebrows. Her ability to work the glass is another part of her skill set that she has put emphasis on. Wright joins a Trojans team that two seasons ago was two victories shy of advancing to a Lower State final.
Grace Owens Grace Owens 5'9" | SG Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach | 2024 State SC – Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach – Playing in Myrtle Beach is nothing new for Owens given her time with the Saints. Owens has no issue providing her versatility as an asset to her team. She can play a number of positions on the basketball court – including at guard, forward and as a wing. Owens was able to show how well she plays away from the ball.
Shemaiyah Earle Shemaiyah Earle 5'11" | SF Woodmont | 2024 State SC – Woodmont HS – She displays early and often why one should consistently watch out for her. Earle primarily plays the forward position and is listed at 5’10. Earle runs the floor with efficiency and consistently gets in position to make plays in the paint. She is an effective rebounder and will collect offensive boards then put them back through the basket for two more points. Earle will also make good passes off defensive rebounds to guards that can set up an offense. She will return to a Wildcats team that finished 14-5 last season and made the 5A playoffs.
Trinity Nesbitt Trinity Nesbitt 5'10" | PF Woodmont | 2024 State SC – Woodmont HS – Speaking of noteworthy Wildcats from the 2024 class … and noteworthy Wildcats from the 2024 class that do plenty of work in the paint. One would expect that as she progresses in her career that she will be even better than she already is as a scorer. Nesbitt is one of the better rebounders one would have had the chance to see at PGH Top 250 Expo. She is very agile and has the ability to make plays on defense – including upping her steals and block numbers. Nesbitt will also give a team offensive production even from 3-point land.
Antoinet Cheeseboro Antoinet Cheeseboro 5'6" | CG Dutch Fork | 2024 State SC – Dutch Fork – When attending a Silver Foxes game, one will want to see AC. One thing those would have seen is how well she shoots the 3-point shot. Cheeseboro also does plenty with her defensive footwork and that can translate into getting opposing ball carriers off balance to cough up said ball. She can get nifty with her dribbling and ball handling skills, then uses her quickness to slice and dice her way through defenders on her way to the cup. Cheeseboro has also excelled in the transition game. She will also draw contact, then sink her free throws afterwards.
Brianna Cook Brianna Cook 5'10" | PF Legion Collegiate | 2024 State SC – Legion Collegiate (Rock Hill) – One thing that Lancers coach Kevin King is not short on is talent and Cook is a big reason for that. Cook certainly provides a presence that creates a challenge for anyone drawing her as an assignment. She plays stout defense which leads to her coming away with steals – and causing those turnovers can create opportunities for her team to make things happen in the transition game, which also displays how well she runs the floor. Cook will cook in the paint as she receives passes with her back to the rim, then convert on high-percentage shot chances. She ensures her team is also the beneficiary of her various hustle plays.
Rickell Brown Rickell Brown 5'7" | SG Sumter | 2024 State SC – Sumter HS – Prep Girls Hoops has become very familiar with Brown over this offseason and travel season– including seeing her at an LBI Spring Invitational in Easley as well as team camps at Francis Marion and Coker College. Brown will find ways to ensure points get put on the board for her team, including via the 3-pointer. She is also very quick and is excellent in transition. Her court vision and passing are elements to her winning game that have made Sumter one of the premier teams in South Carolina girls basketball. During the travel season, she plays for Sumter Elite.
