Today I took a look at the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, won last season by Brillion. With an influx of sophomore talent last season, this coming year looks to be a year of growth for the incoming junior class. With some first-team seniors a season where the young talent makes the conference their own. So it’s only right we take a look at the top talent this coming season within the conference.
Megan Schuman Megan Schuman 6'0" | SF Brillion | 2023 State WI -5’10 G/F-’23-Brillion: The most fitting place to start is with the returning player of the year, that being Megan Schuman Megan Schuman 6'0" | SF Brillion | 2023 State WI . Coming off a sophomore season where Schuman averaged 18.7 points and 7.1 rebounds a night. Schuman is a versatile athlete who can score in volume. Her game is very good at this stage and she’s earned her role playing big minutes for Brillion. She was a key cog in the Lions machine that came just 5 points short of a regional title. Her next step is to get begin to up her efficiency a little bit. A little low last season, but that could be due to a lot of factors. She is an intense athlete who won the player of the year award for a reason and I’m expecting her to build off of her early success.
Allyson Kakes-5’9 G-’23-Two Rivers: The other sophomore who unanimously made first-team all-conference is this Two Rivers standout. Without full information on her or any video that I could find while writing, her stats tell a story about her style of play. As a team, the Purple Raiders didn’t seem to take many three’s and Kakes didn’t either. That meaning Kakes was scoring in an extremely difficult manner. What I gather from this is that she has a natural ability to score that may not have been completely explored yet. She is one to keep an eye on as these next two seasons go by.
Olivia Hoerl Olivia Hoerl 5'11" | CG Chilton | 2022 State WI -5’10 G-’22-Chilton: Hoerl is an excellent scorer who has a very interesting shot chart. Of her recorded 181 shots last season 67 of them were from behind the three-point line where she made 40% of those shots. She is an excellent shooter who plays her role well. One thing I like about players like Hoerl is that there is one obvious thing about her game that she excels at. She is definitely a shooter that some schools could use. It also doesn’t hurt that she rebounds her position well, and swipes two and a half steals a game.
Grace Schisel Grace Schisel 5'8" | SG New Holstein | 2023 State WI -5’7 G-’23-New Holstein: Schisel is a more extreme example of what Hoerl does. Of the 211 shots, she took 131 of them were three-pointers. She shoots them at a slightly lower 35%, but the point still remains she has earned to trust of her coaches to have that green light. What I will say about her shooting is that it’s probably better than her percentages look. One of the best indicators of shooting is obviously free throws, which she shot at an 82% clip (50/61). I have a genuine curiosity if her shooting numbers pick up and have a bit of a return to the mean.
