Loma High School, the 90’s with Alissa Murphy of Scripps Ranch and Eisha Bohman from Rancho Buena Vista. Then in the Early 2000’s with arguably the best class ever in the county (2004) with Candice Wiggins of La Jolla Country Day and Charde Houston from San Diego High school really putting San Diego County on the map in that era. Later on from 2013 – 2017 San Diego was blessed to see current WNBA & College players Kelsey Plum ‘13 (La Jolla Country Day) of the Las Vegas Aces, Dijonai Carrington ‘16 (Horizon Christian) of the Connecticut Sun and current University of South Carolina standout Destiny Littleton ‘17 (The Bishop’s School) come through the ranks.
The Class of ‘22 has a couple of players in this class that in the future could rank right up there with these big time stars from the city. Here’s a look at our top 10 rankings in the class of 2022.
1. Isuneh “Ice” Brady
6’4 Small Forward
Hometown: San Diego, California
Club Team: Cal Sparks
High School: Cathedral Catholic
Brady is a really skilled strong versatile player with an advanced IQ and natural feel for the game. She’s a lefty with really sound footwork on the block and excellent touch around the basket where she’s comfortable using either hand. She is really good at getting to her comfort spots in the post and then taking her time and getting the exact shot she wants. Brady is really strong and has already displayed excellent body control when keeping defenders wherever she wants them. She does not allow a single post defender to cause her to take bad or rushed shots. When doubled she makes defenders pay with her ability to find cutters and shooters all over the court. She has a really good face up game that compliments her post game perfectly and routinely knocks down mid range jumpers 15 feet and in. She has a solid handle and is not afraid to put the ball on the floor even against smaller defenders. She doesn’t shoot a lot of 3’s at this stage of her career but her shot mechanics on her deep ball are very good which leads you to believe with more reps and opportunity she can be a consistent threat from 3. Brady is an excellent rebounder with timing and ball skills, as well as very strong hands so when she touches a rebound she typically secures it. She is a good defender in the post and has the athletic ability and footwork to stay in front of perimeter players when she has too. COMMITTED TO UCONN
- Jessica Grant Jessica Grant 5'7" | SG Mission Hills HS | 2022 State CA
5’8 Shooting Guard
Hometown: San Marcos, California
Club Team: EBO
High School: Mission Hills
Jessica Grant Jessica Grant 5'7" | SG Mission Hills HS | 2022 State CA is on the short list of the best shooters in the county. She’s the type of shooter that makes you assume it’s going in everytime she shoots it. Her shooting ability is at such a high level it makes the other aspects of her game very underrated. Grant is a very good ball handler and play maker so defenders are not able to just crowd her or run her off the line because she will make defenses pay when she puts the ball on the deck. She’s a solid playmaker with good vision and passing skills. Grant’s most underrated skill would be her high level athleticism despite her diminutive size/frame. This is most on display on the defense end where she stays in front of quick guards and plays the passing lanes very well in her teams defensive schemes. COMMITTED TO UC SANTA BARBARA
- Izzy Navarro
5’7 Point Guard
Hometown: San Diego, California
Club Team: West Coast United
High School: Cathedral Catholic
Izzy has an extremely polished, mature feel for the game at the point guard position. She is a bigger point guard which adds to her exceptional vision and passing skills. Although she has the natural point guard skills, don’t get it confused, she can score the ball effectively from all three levels as well. This versatility allows her to play off the ball when she’s not the primary ball handler. She’s a very good shooter with deep range with a smooth effortless release. She can get hot from deep quick but rarely settles for the outside shot and has a good understanding of good shot selection. Her ability and understanding of changing speeds is what really makes her such an effective playmaker as she really keeps defenders off balance. Like all good point guards with scoring ability she has a very good understanding of shot selection in terms of when to set up teammates or to look for her own shot. Navarro is a smart defender who plays the passing lanes well. COMMITTED TO LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
6’0 Guard
Hometown: San Diego, California
Club Team: Cal Sparks
High School: Cathedral Catholic
Taryn may be the most athletic player in the county. She’s a wing player with good size, strength and length but has very good guard skills. She has a very quick 1st step which allows her to blow by defenders or out muscle them on the perimeter. Johnson is a good finisher that excels at finishing against contact. She is a good shooter and has displayed a good understanding of shot selection as she plays to her strengths primarily staying in attack and playmaker mode. Another player in this class that like a lot of the players in the class Taryn was an impact player immediately. Johnson is a willing and versatile defender who has the foot speed to guard on the perimeter and the size and strength to defend in the post. She embraces the challenge guarding the other team’s best player and loves to get the offensive player’s chest applying relentless pressure. UNCOMMITTED
5’6 Point Guard
Hometown: Carlsbad, California
Club Team: EBO
High School: The Bishop’s School
Despite her size Chong is one of the most skilled players in the county. After 3 seasons she has proved that she can put up points with the best of them. Renee has deep range and quick, short compacted, release on her jump which allows her to get it off against longer defenders on the perimeter. She has a very tight handle and the ability to shoot off the dribble with either hand on and off balance in and around the paint. She is an excellent passer and playmaker. Chong excels at keeping her dribble alive and probing the defense while deep in the paint which allows her to find teammates cutting to the basket. Her size does not prevent her from being a legit 3 level scorer as she routinely shows a willingness to take the ball right at bigger, interior defenders and has a very good float 8-12 feet out. She is more quick and athletic than she looks, which she shows on the defensive end of the court. UNCOMMITTED
- Kennan Ka
5’10 Off-Guard
Hometown: San Marcos, California
Club Team: EBO
High School: Mission Hills
In a class full of multifaceted versatile skilled players Kennan Ka is arguably the most versatile. Kennan is a playmaker from the forward spot with both perimeter skills and the ability to be effective in the paint on both ends. Ka is a talented “jack of all trades” type player who makes winning plays that don’t always show up in the box score. She has a good shot with 3 point range and an excellent passer. She is comfortable handling the ball and leading the break in transition. Ka is the type of player who does everything really well. COMMITTED TO LONG BEACH STATE
- Angie Robles
5’5 Combo Guard
Hometown: San Diego, California
Club Team: EBO
High School: The Bishop’s School
Like her backcourt mate, Renee Chong Renee Chong 5'3" | PG Bishop's HS | 2022 State CA , Angie is an advanced and natural scorer in a small package. Robles is a fierce competitor who is constantly in attack mode. She is really good at pushing the ball and staying low which makes her a very tough guard in space. Her handle, while not overly flashy, is tight, and extremely effective. While not the strength of her game at this point she is a good shooter with 3 point range. Her biggest strength is her ability to finish in the paint, both against size as well as in transition. She’s a crafty finisher who makes shots at various different angles. Angie is also a solid playmaker and willing passer that enjoys setting up teammates especially when she breaks down the defense. UNCOMMITTED
- Salma Youngblood
5’11 Guard
Hometown: San Diego, California
Club Team: EBO
High School: Victory Christian
Salma is a really skilled, smooth lead guard in a long athletic frame. Another player who is really good at changing pace and playing different speeds to keep defenses off balance to get to her comfort spots on the offensive end. She’s the best guard in the county when it comes to posting up and playing with her back to the basket. Her foot work and touch around the basket making her tough to handle for guards and even bigger post players. Salma plays a very downhill game with the ball in her hand, always attacking and putting pressure on the defense. Right now, Salma is more of a scorer than a shooter but she can shoot the ball from 3 and has good mechanics on her shot. She plays with the quiet confidence of a veteran player. UNCOMMITTED
- Alexa Mikeska
5’7 Shooting Guard
Hometown: Carlsbad, California
Club Team: Relentless
High School: Carlsbad
Alexa Mikeska is right there with Taryn Johnson Taryn Johnson 5'11" | SG Cathedral Catholic | 2022 State CA as high level perimeter defenders. Like all good defenders really relish the challenge on the defensive end. Her length and athleticism are the key to her being good on ball as well as off ball in the passing lanes. She is no slouch on the offensive end either as she’s an effective and efficient 3 level scorer who can play both guard positions. COMMITTED TO WILLIAM & MARY
- Naiya Kurnik Naiya Kurnik 5'8" | PG Fallbrook HS | 2022 State CA
5’10 Guard
Hometown: Fallbrook, California
Club Team: EBO
High School: Fallbrook
Naiya is one of the most intriguing players in the county. We have her at #10 but by season’s end she can be ranked a little bit higher. Kurnik has great size for her position, she can finish at the basket with either hand and has a nice mid-range game. Defensively she can guard her position and understands how to play passing lanes and gaps. We’ll definitely keep an eye on her as the season progresses. UNCOMMITTED
