The class of 2024 has completed their freshman season and has now been ranked by Prep Girls Hoops for the first time. Congratulations to the 140 players who’ve made the initial list. If you aren’t listed, don’t freak out. The rankings will be updated around Christmastime and again after the season. Dominate, be a team player, own your role, and you’ll be noticed. Let’s take a look at numbers twenty-five through thirty-two:
#25 – Peyton Marvel Peyton Marvel 5'9" | SG D'Evelyn | 2024 State CO – D’Evelyn
Marvel rolled up her sleeves and went to work last winter. Any freshman who drops 11.8 PPG and 13.9 RPG has got to be 6’2″, right? Nope, Marvel is 5’9″. She’s a Dennis Rodman who can shoot. But come playoff time, the upperclassmen take over, right? Wrong, again! Marvel was Spider-Man in a 22-point, 18-rebound last second playoff loss to Roosevelt in the ’21 CHSAA playoffs. It didn’t take a top-25 ranking to notice Marvel. She was highlighted along with Sara Chicco Sara Chicco 5'10" | SG Rocky Mountain | 2024 State CO and Macy Scheer Macy Scheer 6'0" | SG D'Evelyn | 2024 State CO below in this piece.
#26 – Maeve Salveson Maeve Salveson 5'6" | CG St. Mary's | 2024 State CO – St. Mary’s
What a killer outside threat the Pirates added to their already dominant program. Salveson didn’t just contribute but she changed the course of games for the 13-3 Pirates in her freshman year, hitting two threes in her first high school game and never looking back. The team’s third leading scorer (12.1 PPG) hit 32 of 93 threes (34%) and fits in well with one of the state’s top programs.
#27 – Grace Roscoe Grace Roscoe 6'2" | C Mountain Vista | 2024 State CO – Mountain Vista
Roscoe was a mystery to me as I just haven’t seen her play. Luckily there is the NFHSNetwork and I had to watch this talked-about 6’1″ standout in action. Roscoe has so much upside and potential. Screening angles and timing are so hard for a freshman playing a pick and roll game, yet Roscoe stood out. She 100% has the potential to become a strong, confident, scorer, screener, rebounder, and assister. And with the graduation of the talented Amiya Robinson Amiya Robinson 5'9" | PF Mountain Vista | 2021 State CO , Roscoe has the chance to really go all in as a dominant forward/center starting next month.
#28 – Sara Chicco Sara Chicco 5'10" | SG Rocky Mountain | 2024 State CO – Rocky Mountain
I had the chance to see her play at the recent Power To Play Sports showcase and she confirmed that she’s in this upper group. Chicco is an intriguing prospect in how she’s grown up before growing out, but most college programs who run four or five-out will take a tall player with guard skills before a tall player with post skills. Where Chicco square-pegs a round hole, she delivers for programs seeking versatile ballers who love the game. More on Chicco here.
#29 – Jennifer Altshuler Jennifer Altshuler 5'7" | CG Holy Family | 2024 State CO – Holy Family
Altshuler steps into a new role with the Tigers which could be a big one with her ability to shoot the ball. As a transfer, she’s a bit of a mystery with undefined potential. She’ll take the court with a very talented Holy Family program that has ball handling, size, speed, and legendary coaching to give Altshuler all the tools she needs to go crazy.
#30 – Macy Scheer Macy Scheer 6'0" | SG D'Evelyn | 2024 State CO – D’Evelyn
Scheer was also in the mix for the best Jeffco 4A freshman last year, along with Marvel, Taylin Serlen Taylin Serlen 6'1" | PF Standley Lake | 2024 State CO from Standley Lake, and Penny Urquhart Penny Urquhart 5'10" | SG Littleton | 2024 State CO from Littleton. At 6’0″ and fully capable of paralyzing opponents from deep or embarrassing them around the rim, Scheer could be the second coming of a past D’Evelyn standout, Victoria Szathmary. She isn’t as dominant with her back to the basket but is a stronger driver, just as good of a shooter, and offers the same moxie of playing with a dominant D’Evelyn program.
#31 – Rebecca Winton Rebecca Winton 5'6" | CG ThunderRidge | 2024 State CO – ThunderRidge
Winton adds a ridiculous level of athleticism to the ’24 class. As a top-20 ranked goalie in the entire country, the paint is her penalty box and defense is Winton’s differentiator in both soccer and basketball. Whether diving for saves or for loose balls, with Winton’s hustle and aggressiveness I wouldn’t be surprised to see her play a bigger role this year even though the Grizzlies didn’t lose a lot of scoring to graduation.
#32 – Olivia Loveland Olivia Loveland 5'8" | SF Castle View | 2024 State CO – Castle View
I don’t think I’ve seen a player more ready to step up from role player to the anchor of a competitive, well-coached, 5A program. Loveland is that player. She will explode onto top scoring, rebounding, and assist lists this season. She’s ready to shoot from deep, to create for teammates, and to muscle for blue-collar tough ones inside. I’ve been really impressed with Loveland every time I’ve seen her play this off-season and I think she’s one who could really climb up this list.
