It almost felt like the old days before COVID. This event is special because you get to play with girls you would have never met nor played with. Girls from all over the state were able to hang out and interact with girls from different schools. It can be nerve wracking but it’s good for these young ladies to get out of their comfort zone and experience different backgrounds. After all the nerves settled down, they realized they were all there for one reason: to play basketball.
Trying to scout and evaluate over 250 girls can be overwhelming but its truly exciting that we get to watch all the talent Minnesota has. Where else are you going to see over 250 kids playing in one location? I took on the 2024 class, which was the biggest class in terms of number of attendees. If I counted right there were over 90 sophomores in the gym on Sunday. Here is the the 2024 All Expo team.
FIRST TEAM
Emma Dasovich Emma Dasovich 6'1" | PF Valley Vista | 2024 MN – 6’1 forward, Minnetonka
Emma dominated the paint all day, showing us that she is a top 5 ranked kid. The forward can play high and low and will knock down that mid-range jumper at a high volume. She has great court vision for a forward, and has gotten really good at anticipating the double team coming so she can make the easy pass to the open player. She’s only a sophomore but plays like a vet.
Laura Hauge Laura Hauge 5'9" | SG St. Croix Lutheran | 2024 State MN – 5’9 guard, St. Croix Lutheran
I’ve said this before and ill say it again, Laura is one of the best shooters I have ever seen. She will make a living off that three-point shot. Now that everyone knows about Hauge they know to take away the three, however that doesn’t faze her as she’ll hit a step-back in your face and then do it again. On the contrary the combo guard is getting really good at throwing up that pump fake and driving to the hoop.
Ava Holman Ava Holman 5'9" | CG Champlin Park | 2024 MN – 5’9 guard, Champlin Park
Holman is known for her work ethic and it showed on Sunday. She stays active on both offense and defense, I rarely see her standing in one spot. When she is on the court she is always looking for opportunities to score, whether it be driving to the hoop, cutting through the lane or putting up the quick release three-point shot she has. She has a quick first step and moves to compliment it. One of her most underrated talents is anticipation, she stays one step a head of everyone on the court.
Trinity Wilson – 6’3 center, Lakeville North
Trinity was the talk of the gym at the Expo, showing she belongs with the best. She radiated with confidence and was very active on both ends of the floor. Down low, she positioned herself to create good angles. The center has a nice strong frame that many can’t guard. She’s a pest on the boards too, so you HAVE to box her out. I saw her get so many easy put-backs from missed shots.
Zoe Best Zoe Best 5'10" | SF Incarnate Word Academy | 2024 State MO – 5’7 guard, Minnehaha Academy
New to the scene still after transferring from Iowa, but making a lot of noise. Aliyah is great at getting to the hoop with her quick first and strong body. She uses her body really well when she attacks the rim, almost forcing the defense to foul her. She can also knock it down from beyond the arc.
SECOND TEAM
Gabby Betton Gabby Betton 5'9" | CG Lakeville North | 2024 State MN – 5’9 Guard, Lakeville North
I didn’t realize how fast Betton was until this past weekend. With no set plays she was able to rebound and take it the length of the floor on transition offense and score. She’s built like a basketball player and has a nice frame, so when she attacks the rim she can hold her own and finish in many ways. I like the way she uses her body to create contact, sending her to the free-throw line frequently.
Savannah Gardner Savannah Gardner 5'10" | F Eastview | 2024 MN – 6’0 forward, Eastview
Gardner is long and athletic, and I don’t think she’s done growing. I think in the next two years you”ll see her fill out and be a high college recruit. On Sunday the forward was good at securing the rebound and taking it the length of the floor for an easy layup. At small forward she can really do it all and will step outside the three to knock down open shots. On defense she’s very active, and got a lot of deflections on the ball and down low a lot of blocks.
Finley Ohnstad Finley Ohnstad 6'1" | SF Lakeville South | 2024 State MN – 6’0 forward, Lakeville South
Finley is a strong forward who has the skills to back it up. Quick feet and a high basketball IQ. I can see her potentially transitioning to a guard in college. Her best asset was knocking down threes, but she also attacked the rim nicely using her size to finish.
Rhyan Holmgren Rhyan Holmgren 5'9" | SG St. Peter | 2024 State MN – 5’9 guard, Saint Peter
Holmgren can do it all. I love her overall game. I don’t think she gets tired because she played the same speed for all three games at the Expo. The super athletic guard will be great at the next level. Not only can she Eurostep around you to get to the hoop she is an even better shooter, one of the best in the state!
Alyssa Sand Alyssa Sand 6'2" | PF Albany | 2024 State MN – 6’1 forward, Albany
Sand was a rebounding machine cleaning up everything around the rim with her great length and long arms. Down low she held her own and was able to create space for herself to post up. She has the ability to score all around the rim and finished all the easy buckets.
