The Red Raider Invitational took place and it featured eight teams from across the Upstate that had their eyes on beginning their seasons in the win column. Several of the teams that competed during Friday’s portion of the Invitational proved to be evenly matched.
Prep Girls Hoops made it to Greenville to take in the festivities. Here is a look at from the junior class that turned in stellar showings.
J’Adore Young J’Adore Young 6'4" | C Greenville | 2023 State #27 Nation SC – Greenville HS – As expected, Young proved to be the centerpiece of the Red Raiders offense in its contest with Wade Hampton that closed out Friday’s leg of the Invitational. She made her presence known throughout the game as she connected on high-percentage shots in the painted area in addition to trying a few shots from midrange and long range. Young also managed to corral several rebounds and even made plays on defense in the open floor including intercepted passes. She had at least two buckets in every quarter and finished her team’s game against Wade Hampton having scored 21 points.
Lauren Wearbon Lauren Wearbon 5'6" | CG Southside | 2023 State SC – Mauldin HS – The Mavericks needed every bit of Wearbon’s offensive production she contributed as Mauldin defeated Christ Church Episcopal 57-56 to open the Red Raider Invitational. Wearbon established herself early by setting the offense in addition to showcasing her skills as both a ball handler and a passer. She plays unselfishly as she can attack the rim, but also dish the rock out to one of her teammates. Wearbon also contributed steals, rebounding, and 3-point shooting to Mauldin’s efforts. She finished the game having scored 17 points – which included 10 prior to the halftime period. Wearbon was consistent in her scoring having scored at least one basket in every quarter.
Yasmene Clark Yasmene Clark 6'1" | PF Christ Church | 2023 State SC – Christ Church Episcopal – The Cavaliers gave Mauldin a healthy dose of Clark throughout its game they played to open the Red Raider Invitational. Clark did a great deal of work in the painted area as she would be fouled on several occasions which placed her at the foul line. She plays with a fearless, ferocious attitude and will do what it takes to score. Clark grabbed rebounds in addition to looking to attacking the rim from the perimeter. She proved she can be creative with how she can try to score near the rim and knows where she is on the court at all times. Clark led all scorers in her team’s game with Mauldin having scored 25 points.
Riley Stack Riley Stack 6'5" | SF Wren | 2023 State SC – Wren HS – One may sound like a broken record when bringing up Stack’s stature, but at 6-foot-4, she presents said height advantage over plenty of teams when coming up with a low post strategy. Stack displayed her versatility as she managed to run out in the open floor and play perimeter defense. That versatility extends to her offensive game as she tried shooting the 3-point shot. Stack wins plenty of rebounding battles and also will drive to the basket. She makes extra passes, is hard to score on, can exude confidence and will find herself at the free throw line. She scored 10 points in the Hurricanes’ game with Woodmont.
