She Got Next Tournament: 2024
In this article:
Go west from downtown Columbia, across the mighty Congaree River and one will find themselves at Brookland-Cayce High School.
It is the same high school that once again served as the host site for the She Got Next Tournament – a marquee event on the early portion of South Carolina’s high school basketball calendar. A large number of teams from all portions and corners of the Palmetto State converged on Brookland-Cayce for two days of exciting basketball.
Prep Girls Hoops made that trip to the home court of the Bearcats as well. Here is who caught our attention from the class of 2024.
Olivia Randolph Olivia Randolph 6'2" | PF Wren | 2024 State SC – Westside HS – As it is said on plenty of occasions throughout sports, there are plenty of things that can be coached and others that one cannot help. Standing at 6-foot-2 without question qualifies as part of the latter. Randolph, in the Rams’ contest with Gray Collegiate, tried the midrange jump shot and also was successful from time to time as a shot blocker. She made good passes (including cross-court). Sometimes, a player will affect a game in ways that go beyond the tangibles that may show up on a stat sheet. Randolph had one of those that while fans (and even some players themselves) may not notice, their coaching staffs certainly will.
Terriana Gray Terriana Gray 5'9" | SF A.C. Flora | 2024 State SC – A.C. Flora HS – This is the second consecutive weekend Prep Girls Hoops got a glimpse of Gray as she and her Falcons also competed at last weekend’s tournament at their home school. She is a possibility of making her shots from long range or midrange. She too will get into iso scenarios as a ball carrier and will convert on her and one opportunities to place her at the free throw line for old fashioned 3-point plays. Gray led all Falcons scorers in her team’s game with Legion Collegiate, concluding said game with 13 points and was the only Falcon who finished in double-digits scoring wise.
Victoria Morris Victoria Morris 5'9" | SF South Pointe | 2024 State SC – South Pointe HS – Head coach Stephanie Butler-Graham fielded a starting five of which Morris was part of. The result – a 54-32 victory on Friday afternoon over Denmark-Olar. Morris played like the star she is. She collected steals and played an integral role in the Stallions racing out to a 15-0 to begin the game. Morris is a heads up player as she managed to get a pair of rebounds after two free throw misses by the Vikings’ Dyneka Roberts. One of those steals she had turned into a transition basket. Morris finished the game with 13 points and had only two personal fouls called against her.
Rickell Brown Rickell Brown 5'7" | SG Sumter | 2024 State SC – Sumter HS – There was a public address announcer in the main gym at Brookland-Cayce High School for the She Got Next Tournament. That announcer mentioned Brown’s name on plenty of occasions when Sumter matched up with First Baptist because the Hurricanes’ defense had no answers for Brown on offense. Brown is hard to stop once she gets a full head of steam. Along with her skill for hauling in rebounds, she showed she can score from anywhere – including from 3-point range. Brown led the charge for the Gamecocks with 23 points in the team’s win over First Baptist – and did so after coming off the bench.
Dalasia Brunson – Sumter HS – It appeared that the public address announcer was calling out Brunson’s name almost as much as he did Brown’s. She too was an important piece off the bench for coach Jeff Schaffer’s team. Brunson was consistent in her scoring efforts as two-pointers and free throws took up the bulk of what she accomplished, pointswise. Brunson will steal the ball, then get from one end of the floor to the other in the transition game. Brunson drew contact and went to the line and she also had the first field goal of the second half for Sumter. Brunson scored 12 points.
Kiara Croskey Kiara Croskey 5'6" | PG Sumter | 2024 State SC – Sumter HS – What more could the class of 2024 have given the Gamecocks on Friday night than what it did? While fellow sophomores Brunson and Brown provided the depth that Sumter was looking for off the bench, Croskey was in the Gamecocks’ starting lineup and played accordingly. She absorbed contact and made her tries from the free throw line. She took advantage of First Baptist coughing up the ball and tried to make the most out of those Hurricanes turnovers. Croskey can quickly get from one end of the court to the other. She finished with eight points.
Yannah Seaberry Yannah Seaberry 5'6" | CG First Baptist | 2024 State SC – First Baptist HS – Seaberry has found her way to First Baptist after transferring this past summer from Palmetto Christian in Mt. Pleasant. Hustling for 50-50 balls may not be something that shows up on a stat sheet, but it is something Seaberry showed she will do when the Hurricanes played Sumter this past Friday at the She Got Next Tournament. She gave the Hurricanes more than enough production from the free throw line with as many times as she was at the stripe. Seaberry finished Friday’s game with Sumter with eight points – and six of those eight came via foul shots.
Caitlin Bowling Caitlin Bowling 5'5" | PG JL Mann | 2024 State SC – JL Mann HS – Bowling is one of the few sophomores and/or freshmen on this season’s roster for the Patriots, but it is easy to assume that she too could be one of the seniors and/or juniors with how she plays. One of the integral players off the bench for coach LaMont Wakefield’s Patriots, her offensive production was a major factor in the Patriots maintaining a lead for much of the first half – and why JL Mann went into halftime leading by a score of 23-19. Bowling scored seven points – and all seven occurred in the first 16 minutes of play.
Joyce Edwards Joyce Edwards 6'3" | PF Camden | 2024 State SC – Camden HS – Just as the team the Bulldogs were playing, Cardinal Newman, had a highly touted prospect in Ashlyn Watkins Ashlyn Watkins 6'4" | PF Cardinal Newman | 2022 State #11 Nation SC , Camden of course had one too in the form of its 6-foot-3 star in Edwards. Part of which makes her such a ballyhooed name is how she can quickly get from one end of the court to the other. Another part of it is how creative a passer she can be in the open floor. Edwards is a shot blocker and rebounder with a high basketball IQ as she is well-aware of how much attention she will attract. That high level of attention can mean plenty of contact – and lots of free throws. She stays prepared to receive passes near the rim. Edwards had 18 points to lead Bulldogs point-getters.
Zyasia Carter Zyasia Carter 5'5" | PG Camden | 2024 State SC – Camden HS – Carter tries to make sure she works harder than her competition. She was in the starting lineup for coach Natalie Jeffcoat Norris’ Bulldogs. An important element to her offensive game is how accurate she is when shooting behind the 3-point line. Carter made a pair of treys throughout the contest with Cardinal Newman – one in the first half and another in the second half. Carter also managed to stay out of foul trouble as she only had a pair of personals called against her. She finished Friday evening’s game against the Cardinals with a 10-point effort…one of three Bulldogs who had double-digit point totals.
