Defense played a big role in the Trojans success as they look to be a player in the Quad County conference this season. Prep Girls Hoops NC takes a look at some of the standout performers from this matchup of Johnston County rivals.
Lannah Price (South Johnston 2025 guard)
South Johnston has a pair of freshman that made a big impact in their season opener Monday. The first is guard Lannah Price who led all scorers with 19 points for the Trojans. She showed a wide range of skills that a true point guard has: finding the right reads, not turning the ball over, and taking the right shots. Expect her to have a big season for South Johnston.
Brooke Winborne (South Johnston 2025 forward)
The second freshman is Brooke Winborne who added nine points in her teams victory. She’s a physical presence that protects the rim and rebounds well. Winborne created a lot of second chance opportunities for her team and has a high motor. This freshman duo has potential and they’ll be two prospects to watch in a county filled with talent.
Jessie Gross (North Johnston 2023 guard)
Jessie Gross led the way for North Johnston with 10 points and did everything she could to keep her team in the contest. She will be the primary scoring option on this Panthers team as she serves as the coach on the floor. Gross is a great leader who communicates well defensively, can handle the ball well, and can get to the basket with ease.
Nakiya Blue (North Johnston 2022 forward)
Although Blue wasn’t able to get on the board scoring wise, she made her presence felt on the defensive end for the Panthers. Her length and ability to get in the passing lanes caused fits for the Trojans at times during this game. She’ll be another prospect that has to carry the offensive load for North Johnston this year.
