These ladies were ready to play against other people besides their teammates. Both Monday and Tuesday nights had opening contests that displayed some talented young ladies. Kids were diving on the floor, slashing through gaps, making incredible passes, and knocking down shots from all over.
We’ve said this before, this state is littered with girls who can go. Our state has tough and hungry kids who love to compete. As week 1 continues on with bouts on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, here are some notable Middle Tennessee kids who provided some early season excitement as the season tipped off.
Sydney Ryan Sydney Ryan 5'10" | SG Brentwood | 2022 State TN (5’11/G/Brentwood)– The Furman commit was lights out for her club Tuesday night. Sydney led her team with a game-high 28 pts. She was the catalyst for her club, scoring the ball from multiple spots on the floor. Sydney plays the game with poise and has incredible court vision. She has a great feel for the game and has a knack for being around the ball. Look for her to be one of the leading candidates to be an All-District MVP this year.
Cassie Gallagher Cassie Gallagher 5'11" | SG Cookeville | 2023 State TN (5’11/SG/Cookeville)– This versatile young lady led her club in scoring as they beat a talented Oakland ball club. Cassie dropped 22 points, while contributing on the glass as well. Her offensive prowess provides Coach Gillies another threat to add to their already talented Lady Cavs team.
La’Zaviona Hawkins (5’7/PG/ Goodpasture)– High energy kid who led her club with 18 pts and 10 steals. La’Zaviona is a force to be reckoned with. Blessed with incredible quickness, she has great court awareness that enables her to be a threat on both ends of the floor. From shooting beyond the arc to slashing through the lane, La’Zaviona is the sparkplug for this talented Lady Cougars team. She’s a lockdown defender who loves to pickpocket her opponents.
Asia Barr Asia Barr 5'8" | PG Lebanon | 2022 State TN (5’7/PG/Lebanon)– High energy kid who plays the game with passion and speed. Asia had a game-high 16 points against a Cane Ridge club. This year, Asia will play a bigger role, providing a talented Lady Devilettes team with some veteran leadership. She is lanky and instinctive. Look for her to create havoc on the defensive end, that will lead to transitional buckets.
Gaby Beaty (5’8/G/York Institute)– This high-character kid led her Lady Dragonettes with 30points as they won their season opener. Gaby is a hard-nosed kid who is willing to do whatever it takes to help her team win. From playing in your face defense to knocking down shots from multiple levels, this talented kid is looking to have a great junior season.
Alonna Poole Alonna Poole 5'11" | SF Oakland | 2024 State TN (6’0/G/Stewart’s Creek)– This dynamic player led her Stewart’s Creek team with 21 points as they beat Franklin Co. Blessed with size and speed, this versatile player can do it all for her club. From delivering time passes, knocking down shots from 3, to attacking gaps, and finishing against contact, Alonna will be a kid to keep your eye on. As she gains confidence, look for her to take major strides and help lead her team towards deep tournament contention.
