Continue ReadingThe 2021-2022 high school basketball season is underway and Prep Girls Hoops Arizona will be following along the entire year! Each week we will release new articles about a handful of players that stood out above the rest. This article is going to be focusing on the talent that has been shown so far from the Freshman in Class AAAAA up until the mid-point of December.
Aiyanna Perkins – Freshman – McClintock High School
Perkins is the definition of a standout freshman and exactly what these specific articles are all about. The shifty guard out of McÇlintock High School has already gained the Captain status and is showing signs of a young leader in just the first few games of the season. Aiyanna is averaging 23.1 points per game and 7.1 steals per game as well as 6.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and, 1.3 blocks per game to help her team towards a 6-2 overall record in mid-December. She has scored 18+ points in every game so far this year and is making it look easy. The freshman guard has finished with two double-double performances, one with 28 points, 13 steals, and the other with 31 points and 12 steals. Overall one of the top prospects to watch for this season in my opinion.
Sidney Anderson – Freshman – 5’9″ – Ironwood Ridge High School
The five-foot-nine first-year standout for the Ironwood Ridge Lady Nighthawks is combo guard, Sidney Anderson. Anderson is averaging 13.1 points per game, 3.0 rebounds per game and, 2.1 steals per game to start the 2021-2022 high school basketball season. With a 30 point game early in December, it looks like it is taking no time for the young gun to get comfortable playing up at the 5A Varsity level. Sidney also makes her presence on the court known through her ability to use her quick hands and feet to get the necessary steal. She dominated down low last week in a win over Mountain View (12/15) where she finished the game with 17 points, 83% 2FG, and 70% from the free-throw line.
Savanna Dotray – Freshman – Sunrise Mountain High School
Dotray is beginning her first year of high school playing small forward/guard for the Sunrise Mountain Lady Mustangs Varsity team. The freshman has contributed to the team’s overall 7-1 record to start the year by averaging 7.6 points per game, 3.6 rebounds per game and, 1.6 assists per game. Her confidence has grown as the season continues and she had back-to-back double-digit point finishes against Liberty (12/06) and Paradise Valley (12/09). In the 86-19 win over Paradise Valley, Savanna was very close to picking up her first career double-double where she ended the game scoring 14 points and brought down 9 rebounds, 7 of them coming from the offensive end of the floor.
Kelsey Watts – Freshman – 5’8″ – Campo Verde High School
Watts is a five-foot-eight combo point guard/shooting guard for the Campo Verde Lady Coyotes. So far this season, Kelsey is averaging 7.3 points per game, 2.9 rebounds per game and, 1.1 assists per game to help towards her team’s overall record of 10-3. She is the type of player that can score at all three levels and is not afraid to get to the basket in traffic. The young superstar has already racked up THREE MaxPreps Player of the Game awards to start the 2021-2022 basketball season for her outstanding performances against Dobson, Paradise Valley and, North Canyon. Watts is another freshman that is just on the edge of her first career double-double and we will be ready and waiting to brag on her once she gets it!
Nevaeh Urenda – Freshman – Flowing Wells High School
Last but certainly not least is the freshman out of Flowing Wells High School that can do it all. The guard for the Lady Caballeros is averaging 5.8 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per game as well as 3.1 assists and 2.3 steals per game to help towards her team’s overall record of 11-1. Urenda shares the ball with confidence and precision. She has perfected a strong drive to the basket that automatically opens up a nearby teammate. Nevaeh has the ability to knock down the three ball and get inside to draw the foul. The future is bright for this hustling all-star!
