Sierra Canyon and Fairfax were the two local schools who participated and they had the opportunity to play on an NBA court. I was able to attend the event and here’s a quick look at some of the top standouts.
1. JuJu Watkins – Sierra Canyon 2023
Watkins is a pure scorer. She loves having the ball in her hands and making plays. She has a smooth jumper off the dribble and can elevate over the defense to get her shot off clean. She can pull-up in transition from three-point range or she can get all the way to cup and finish. She can stop in the lane with a little runner too. Great at drawing contact and getting to the free-throw line where she shoots it at a good clip.
2. Kennedy Pullard – Fairfax 2023
Pullard started off the game a little bit timid, but she showed more aggressiveness on the offensive end as the game went on. She made some tough drives to the rim. She’s a good ball-handler in the halfcourt and she take defenders off the dribble. She does a good job at drawing fouls whether its on the drive or on the shot. She can get herself to the free-throw line with consistency.
3. Mackenly Randolph Mackenly Randolph 5'10" | PF Sierra Canyon | 2024 State CA – Sierra Canyon 2024
One of the areas that Randolph has really improved on is her ball-handling. She’s much more comfortable handling the ball whether its on the break in the halfcourt. She can put that ball on the floor and get to the rim where she’s a strong finisher. She’s very mobile and moves well in the paint. Very active on the glass. She has improved range too on her jumper. She can hit consistently from midrange and out to the three-point line as a stretch big.
4. Sage Calvino – Fairfax 2022
Calvino stood out as a great midrange shooter. She can shoot on the catch or off the dribble. When she puts the ball on the floor, she can get all the way to the rim. One thing that really impressed me though was her effort rebounding. She wasn’t the tallest or biggest player on the court but fought on the glass through traffic. For a small wing, she was always in good rebounding position. Good on-ball defender.
