It wasn’t in Kilah Freelon Kilah Freelon 6'0" | PF Mullen | 2022 State CO ’s plans. It simply arose as a possibility and she decided to go for it.
About 3 minutes into the second quarter of a semifinal in the Best of the Nest Tournament hosted by Horizon in Thornton the past Thursday, the gifted Mullen senior picked off an errant pass on the right wing. She did so in full stride.
“Why not go for it?” Freelon wondered as she broke to the rim uncontested from the left side.
So, yes, she was able to dunk the basketball in a regular-season game. No, it wasn’t as smooth as it could have been, but it rattled in for a rare Colorado-schoolgirl slam.
The ice – and aura – had been broken in the Rocky Mountains when Regis Jesuit’s Fran Belibi, now at Stanford, accomplished the rare-air fete for females in a game and later won a postseason all-star contest.
Freelon, the Prep Girls Hoops-Colorado 2022 No. 5, hadn’t been practicing how to throw one down, “just every once in a while,” she said. She called it “fun” and the Texas Tech signee added it to her growing list of improvements.
The 6-footer with high-end speed and jumping ability is looking more confident on offense as the Mustangs, three-time defending Class 4A champions, are off to a 3-0 start. Freelon has looked smoother in and around the lane and been flying around on defense. She is blocking shots down low as well as on the perimeter.
Through the three games, Freelon is averaging 16 points along with 7.0 rebounds.
Plus, she has lots of season remaining to refine her unique talents.
Said Mullen head coach Frank Cawley of Freelon’s highlight: “Wow!”
