This time last year there were many travel restrictions in place that did not allow teams to cross their respective state lines. But the game has survived and is better than ever. As I covered two events in the Metro Birmingham area, there were abundant post talents in Alabama.
2022 | Brianna Howell Brianna Howell 5'11" | C Minor | 2022 State AL | PF 5-10 | Minor. Brianna is a true post player is a time when a real post player is rare. She has that college player body and is a load down low. Brianna can rebound, score and be a good post defender.
2023 | Dominique Owens Dominique Owens 6'1" | C Midfield | 2023 State AL | P 5-10 | Midfield is an athletic post that runs the floor well. “Que” as she is affectionately called, is a good defender, rebounder and can score most of the time and by any way necessary. I saw Que scoring a lot by gaining position over the opponents’ posts and I also by shooting that short-range jumper.
2026 | Kelci Andrews Kelci Andrews 6'4" | C Hazel Green | 2026 AL | P 6-3 | Auburn, this is another name in our richly talented Class of 2026 (currently eighth graders). Standing 6-3, and I really feel she is a little taller, Kelci is a product of two good collegiate players. Mom was a stand-out basketball player at LSU and Alabama, then a junior college coach in Kelci’s younger years, Dad is a former RB at the University of Alabama. She dominates the paint with your shot-blocking ability and by taking advantage of her height by scoring well around and near the basket. Kelci can also step out and shoot the three. She is young and will only improve on her game as she continues to gain valuable experience in her second year of varsity play.
2024 | Tamya Smith Tamya Smith 6'0" | SF Pleasant Grove | 2024 State AL | F 6-1 | Pleasant Grove is a post player with guard skills. “Tee” as I call her can handle the ball, loves to step out and score the three. She has a slender body and long arms that help her to be a great defender. Tamya plays that upfront middle person on PG’s press which leads to many turnovers which leads to points. When our 2024 rankings come out after the holiday break, look for her to be high on the list.
2025 | Jaliyah Smith Jaliyah Smith 5'10" | PF Bob Jones | 2025 State AL | P 5-10 | Sparkman. I first saw Jaliyah play this summer, and I was very impressed with her ability to score in the paint and out on the wing. She is a quiet player that just gets the job done with her ability to stretch the floor, and as she continues to mature with age Jaliyah will be what I call a “problem”. She is just a tough player.
