Continue ReadingThe inaugural Battle 205 event lived up to the hype, and I am already looking forward to next year’s event. Some amazing hoops was played over the three days, with teams from the Metro area taking on City school teams. In the end, the Metro captured the inaugural prize with 15 victories to the city’s 4 wins. The teams invited to participate gave fans three days of exciting basketball, so let’s dive into some of the standouts from these fantastic teams on the girls’ side.
Teralyn Hill Teralyn Hill 5'11" | SF Parker | 2025 State AL (6’0/Power Forward/2025)
School: Parker HS
Instagram: its.teralyn1
Twitter: @_teralyn_
Teralyn is listed as a power forward, but she is not the traditional PF. She does not spend a lot of time banging in the paint or being a physical factor. When you look at T, she shows a lot of potential but what sparks so much interest about her is the 2025 graduation year.
If she can develop, she can build upon her fundamentals and emerge as a player to follow.
She has a nice mid-range J that she knocked down with consistency. She got in on the boards at times but has to continue to get stronger to have a level of dominance on the glass. Defensively she contested shots, and as she develops on that end, she has the potential to be dominant on that end of the court as well. When it comes to T’s game and her trajectory, we will know a lot as she finishes her freshman year and uses the off-season to make huge leaps in her development.
Dyona Maria Jones (6’0/Post/2022)
School: Hewitt-Trussville HS
Instagram: Dyona.24
Twitter: @Dyona_24
Dyona continues to put up numbers, and she absolutely dominated the paint in both games that I saw her play at #BHMBattle205. Parker nor Carver had answers for her. She dominated the boards and was able to get whatever she wanted in the paint. Her wingspan caused problems on both ends of the court.
She defended the paint well and made it tough for opposing teams to get good looks.
I saw her a couple times earlier in the season, and she continues to give consistent production that impacts winning. If she can continue to produce at the level that she has the first half of the season, and with other teammates finding their groove, Hewitt has a chance to make a run.
Courtney Williams (5’9/Wing/2023)
School: Parker HS
Instagram: courtneyjenay
Twitter: @CourtneyWilliams
What was exciting about Courtney’s game was her versatility. She can play inside and out, and she handles the rock for her squad and can facilitate the offense. She often attacked off the bounce, which was part of her scoring package that she utilized the most. With her squad, she had to be intentional in forcing action as she was one of the playmakers that got others going.
She gave a lot of effort on both ends of the court, and I liked how she competed.
She has a strong body, and she knew how to use it when attacking the rim, as she embraced the contact and was able to get solid looks at the rim. Being one of the leaders on a youthful squad, she can help Parker develop chemistry this year and position themselves to have a significant season her senior year.
April Marguerite Hooks (5’8/Shooting Guard/2023)
School: Hewitt-Trussville HS
Instagram: april_hooks
Twitter: @april_hooks2023
April’s game is growing as the season goes along. She plays at her pace, and you rarely see her rushed or out of control. With her offensive tools and ability to score the rock, I watch her and wonder if she knows that she has another gear that she could kick it into.
I sat at the #BHMBattle205 and watched April score at all 3 levels.
She has a nice stroke, gets to the rack, and knows how to get to the line. Her all-around game is impressive as she can score and facilitate. She has good vision and can deliver the rock on time and on target. She is a solid player for Coach Hunter and is a crucial piece to the success of the Lady Huskies.
Keyarra Scottland (5’4/Point Guard/2024)
School: Mortimer Jordan HS
Instagram: keyarrascottland_
Twitter: N/A
Keyarra is in a good situation as she is surrounded by a talented group of ladies that allows her to fit in and develop her game. As a sophomore, she has very little pressure as a lot of the production is handled by her teammates. With eyes elsewhere and teams having to gameplan for others, Keyarra can come in and benefit from the attention her teammates get night in and night out.
I have seen Mortimer Jordan several times this year, and Keyarra continues to grow in both the areas of facilitating and scoring.
The offensive culture of her squad is shooting the trey ball, and Keyarra fits right into the culture. She shoots the trey ball well in c&s action and handles the rock when running the show. She is definitely a player whose game is emerging.
More is coming from #BHMBattle205.
