The 2025 class has certainly shined on the court this season. Two freshman trios at Sandia high school and Hobbs high school have excelled on the basketball court and have made people take notice. Sydney Benally, Hope Giddings, and Audri Wright have helped Sandia to a 10-2 record this season and a recent 3rd place finish at the Albuquerque Metro Tournament. Hobbs has a dynamic trio in their own right in Brynn Hargrove, Bhret Clay, and Jayla David. With the loss of their team leader and top player Wisdom Anthony to a knee injury for the year, they have stepped into bigger roles and are looking to gain momentum over the next few months and be ready for a state tournament run. Here is a closer look at these players.
Sydney Benally 5’8 PG/SG h
15.9 P/G 5.2 Reb 4.6 Ast 4.4 Stl
Benally is a complete player on both ends of the court. Defensively she has shown the ability to guard at a high level. On the offensive side, her court vision and basketball IQ are elite. Her range extends well beyond the arc and her ability to get to the bucket with her dribble is also impressive. She has been contacted and talked with multiple colleges at all levels, including UNM, NM State, Oklahoma State, Nebraska Omaha, Northern New Mexico, and Howard College.
Hope Giddings 5’9 Guard
12.2 P/G 4.8 Reb 2.0 Stl
Giddings is a smooth lefty that can hit from deep. She has shown she can get in the lane and score but also draw contact and get to the free-throw line. Good length for her size that helps her on defense. Hope just received her first college offer from coach Giddens and Northern New Mexico College.
Audri Wright 5’9 Guard
9.5 P/G 6.3 Reb 2.9 Stl
Wright has the size to guard multiple positions which she has done for her team this season. Solid rebounder that leads her team in that category. Her ability to score in transition, post up but also step out and hit the three makes her a valuable piece to the team’s success.
Brynn Hargrove 5’5 PG
8.0 P/G 5.0 Ast 4.0 STL 3.0 Reb
Hargrove has solid handles and good court vision at the point guard spot. Her team plays intense defense which allows her to be active and aggressive and create turnovers and steals. Brynn has shown that she can shoot it from deep as well and has the confidence to do so. She made Varsity as an 8th grader a year ago and continues to shine as a 9th grader for the Eagles.
Bhret Clay 5’8 SG
8.0 P/G 5.0 Reb 2 STL
Clay is a quick athletic guard that uses those strengths to showcase her talents. Her length allows her to create havoc on defense which then turns into offense as she is fast in transition and can get to the bucket. Bhret has also played varsity since her 8th-grade year. Colleges have taken notice as Bhret took multiple unofficial visits before the season started which included ACU, SMU, and UNM.
Jayla David 5’10 Forward
10.0 P/G 8.0 Reb
New to the team this year and a good addition is Jayla David. Has helped on the defensive end and is the second leading rebounder on the team. Her ability to score adds to her value as the team looks to win their district. Her contributions will be needed come state tournament time.
