All “A” State Tournament – Morning Session (part 1)
In this article:
The All “A” State Tournament kicks off bright and early this coming Wednesday morning and that means it is time to start talking about the 8 different All “A” Classic Regional Tournaments I attended during a two-week period. But before we get into talking about the other teams that did not make it to Richmond let’s talk about the teams that did.
The morning session includes an 8:30 game between 8th Region representative the Owen County Lady Rebels and the Carlisle County Comets of the 1st Region followed later in the session by an 11:30 game between Paris Lady Hounds of the 10th Region and their neighbors to the North in the 9th Region the Holy Cross (Covington) Indians.
Unfortunately, I have not seen Carlisle County, Paris, or Holy Cross (Covington) play due to distance, weather, and a scheduling mix-up respectively. So what I have to say about their players will be brief. But better coverage of these teams will follow at some time after the tournament.
Lexie Moore Lexie Moore 5'9" | SG Owen County | 2022 State KY – ’22 5’10″/SG – Owen County
Moore is one of the most dynamic scorers in the Commonwealth and one of my favorite players to watch. She has been scoring 15.8 points per game and shooting 36.8% from three-point range although she does not shoot them very often preferring to display her impressive set of skills to put the ball in the hole and set up her teammates for easy points (53.5% field goal percentage).
She leads by example through her tenacity and has helped her team to a 14-6 record losing only to some of the top teams in the KHSAA. I recommend you see the Owen County schedule yourself to understand just how many great teams the Lady Rebels have faced off against during the season.
Gracie Ferguson Gracie Ferguson 5'11" | PF Owen County | 2023 State KY – ’23 5’11″/PF – Owen County
Ferguson would be a D-1 prospect if she were only a few inches taller, but she is going to be a star in the paint for a smaller college. She has an impressive post-game with a strong, sturdy body that makes her a great in-zone rebounder She is making 59.6% of her field goals (16th in the state) for 14.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while facing some of the best Bigs in the state of Kentucky.
Haley Logan – ’24 5’10″/G – Owen County
Logan is also scoring at a high field goal percentage of 56.2% and scoring 12.2 points per game. She completes the offensive triumvirate of a highly efficient scoring machine that I could have told you would have made it to Richmond after the 2nd game in their season in a 7 point loss to current 2A Champion Christian Academy of Louisville.
Kiera Whitaker – ’24 5’7″/G – Carlisle County
Whitaker is the 2nd leading scorer in the tournament averaging 19 points per game. Carlisle will go as far as she can carry them and so far that means a 10-1 record against teams from the KHSAA.
Maddison Wright – ’22 5’9″/G – Carlisle County
Wright is averaging a double-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds. She is the steady sidekick of the Comets successful early-season run.
Jamie Cowan Jamie Cowan 5'11" | PF Paris | 2023 State KY – ’23 5’10″/PF – Paris
Cowan is averaging 13.2 points, 9.4 rebounds on the season for the Lady Hounds.
Sanaa Jackson Sanaa Jackson 5'7" | SF Paris | 2023 State KY – ’23 5’7″/SF – Paris
Jackson is making 30,4% of her three-pointer, and 71.2% of her foul shots to average 14.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in a 12-5 season. But two of the losses are to George Rogers Clark which most teams in the state couldn’t beat either.
Julie Hunt – ’24 6’2″/C – Holy Cross (Covington)
Hunt is the 5th leading scorer in the tournament with 16.6 points per game while shooting 54,8% from the floor. She also pulls down 10.7 rebounds against a schedule that has the Indians punching above their weight class from week to week.
Hanna Robinson Hanna Robinson 5'9" | SF Holy Cross Covington | 2022 State KY – ’22 5’8″/SF – Holy Cross (Covington)
Robinson is tallying 11.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and making 76.9% of her free throws.
