Deja Young (Sr.) – 5-8 G, Teaneck
Young has shown steady improvement through her four-year career in high school and is having her best season to date. She’s focused much more on her perimeter shooting and it’s paid off as Young looks more poised when she’s shooting. She’s found open looks at a more frequent pace and is knocking down threes with more efficiency than ever before. Young has improved her defense and passing this season, thanks to increased court awareness and a quick thinking on the floor.
Kayla Dupoux (Sr.) – F/G, North Bergen
Dupoux has stepped up tremendously into a starter and a force for North Bergen in her senior season. She’s fit into the lineup well as primarily a forward, but a versatile player who can slot in as a guard when needed. She’s a great scorer and has flourished making shots in the lane. She’s incorporated a midrange game into the mix as well, but her bread and butter is points in the paint. On the same vein, she’s attacked the glass well and is steadily improving as a rebounder.
Alyssa Cueto (So.) – 5-5 PG, Union City
Cueto is coming into her own at just the right time for Union City after finding success as a freshman. The point guard is showing a lot more aggression on offense with great dribble penetration to the lane. She’s quick on her feet with a smooth finish and an easy release when she’s shooting. Cueto has developed herself into a fantastic passer and is finding open teammates more and more on the floor. She’s surveying the court better and quicker, which is allowing for those passes and assists to happen at a higher pace.
Elaine Alcantara (Jr.) – 5-8 F, Memorial
Alcantara has impressed with her defense so far this season and is more active and aggressive on the glass. Where she lacks in height, she makes up for it, boxing out defenders well to give her space to haul in rebounds. She’s also shown that she can be a rim protector, blocking shots with more consistency than before. Her progress has been slow and steady so far, but there’s a greater overall confidence about her and the production has followed.
Tatiana Nunez (Jr.) – 5-7 PG/SF, North Bergen
Nunez had her best game of the season on Saturday in a win over Memorial and that game unlocked the potential that she has with North Bergen. She was seemingly everywhere on the floor, causing a multitude of turnovers off steals and making opponents pay on the other end with a great shot selection. Nunez picks her spots well to score and has shown her worth as a defender. This junior is making moves fast in the HCIAL.
