I was able to attend and here’s a quick look at some of the top standouts that I saw.
1. Stephanie Villegas – Huntington Park 2022
Villegas was a solid frontcourt player who was comfortable in both the high post and down low. In the second half of the game, she looked much more decisive. Defensively, she started moving her feet better and staying vertical on drives to the rim. She also started moving better without the ball and making strong cuts/dives to the rim. She showed an ability to make a move off the dribble from the free-throw line. Gets good positions for rebounds. Could finish stronger at the rim.
2. Selena Rivera – San Fernando 2022
Rivera was a good combo guard with good ball-handling skills and able to get to her spots on the court. She pushes the pace well in transition and finds open teammates. In the halfcourt, she keeps the ball moving and makes the right reads, she had a couple of nice pocket passes. She can shoot off the dribble and off balance as well. She’s comfortable sharing ball-handling duties and playing off-ball as well.
3. Valerie Duran – Huntington Park 2022
Duran was capable of playing both guard positions. She took on a primary role offensively but was also able to do a little playmaking and keep the ball moving. She can attack off the dribble and she uses the glass well for a little runner in the lane. She gets into the defense and puts pressure on whoever is guarding her. Good ball-handler who can dribble under pressure. Defensively, she moves well and keeps up with the ball-handler.
4. Natalia Villalobos South East 2025
Villalobos stood out for her hustle plays. She covers a lot of ground defensively and plays good pressure defense on the wing. She’s able to force turnovers and she actually got a couple of blocks on opponents jumpers. She moves well without the ball and is more comfortable looking for her offense that way. She can finish at the rim and looks for off-ball scoring opportunities. Makes good, decisive passes. Sets good screens for a wing.
