Continue ReadingWith the 2021-2022 regular season resuming play for girls basketball, several different tournaments (ABQ Metro Championships or SunDevil Invitational) allowed for many teams from the greater Albuquerque area to return to the floor – prompting good matchups and great play.
From terrific shooting displays to fantastic dribble moves, let’s take a look at some backcourt players who have impressed and progressed. The backcourt consists of both guard positions – Point Guard and Shooting Guard.
Backcourt Players
- Alyssa Maes, Sophomore, St. Pius
Combo guard Alyssa Maes is essentially a swiss-army knife for the Lady Spartans. Maes does it all as she can score from multiple areas on the floor (16 points per game) which includes making 3’s at a proficient clip. The sophomores ability to rebound is what stands her out from the rest as she grabs 8 rebounds a contest thanks to her good size and her constant pursue of the ball. A good passer in her own right, Maes is also averaging 7 assists per game. Look for Maes to continue her stellar play for St. Pius as the season goes on.
- Olivia Montano Olivia Montano 5'4" | CG Sandia | 2024 State NM , Sophomore, West Mesa
The sophomore is a talented combo guard who does a bit of everything for the Mustangs. Francia is the Lady Mustangs leading scorer and primarily shot taker as she currently averages over 10 points per game. Very capable of knocking down 3’s, Francia can also score inside the paint area making her more versatile.
- Destiny Jackson Destiny Jackson 5'8" | CG West Mesa | 2024 State NM , Sophomore, West Mesa
Jackson is a quick point guard that can both score a bucket and get a teammate involved. The sophomore is a good ball handler and has multiple offensive moves. Jackson currently averages north of 7 points a contest to go along 5 assists. Look for Jackson to elevate her play to help the Mustangs of West Mesa go on a run.
- Olivia Haddock, Junior, La Cueva
Haddock is very important piece for the La Cueva Bears thanks to her ability to do multiple things on the floor. Haddock seems to always be in the right spot, coming away with loose balls and long rebounds as she averages 5 rebounds per game. The junior has good length allowing her to be disruptive on defense coming away with over 2 steal a game.
- Tina Potin, Junior, Cibola
Potin is a combo guard for the Cibola Cougars who has the ability to score from both inside the 3-point line and behind it. The Junior is a good passer who can get her teammates decent looks as she dishes out around 4 assists per game.
