Continue ReadingIn todays game, the faster pace style of play has pushed many teams and players further out to the perimeter. With little activity happening down low, many players frontcourt players can go through the flow and not make their presence known. However good play is needed from the inside in order for any team to be successful.
The frontcourt consists of two forward positions – small forward, power forward – and the center position. These three positions will typically occupy the low post and paint area but can extend out beyond 12 feet.
To kick off the new calendar year, many teams from the greater Albuquerque area competed in tournaments such as the 2021-2022 ABQ Metro Championships and 2022 Sundevil Invitational.
Lets take a look at who impressed and progressed to open up the month of January.
Frontcourt
Mackenna Lee, Sophomore, Cibola
Mackenna Lee is an athletic small forward that also plays the center position when the Cibola Cougars play “small ball”. Lee is a good mid range shot maker and has the ability to make pull up jumpers in transition. The sophomore is versatile on the defensive end as she can guard multiple positions.
Chioma Holyfield, Sophomore, Eldorado
Chioma Holyfield is a 5’11″ power forward for the Eldorado Eagles. The sophomore does a good job on the boards as she brings in six rebounds a contest. With a good wingspan, Chioma is also disruptive on the defensive end as she can block shots and force turnovers.
Reagon Morris, Junior, St. Pius
Junior Reagon Morris from the Lady Sartans of St. Pius, is a power forward that gets most of her points inside of 10 feet but has the ability to extend out to the 3-point line and is comfortable taking multiple attempts if needed. Morris a good rebounder and does a good job finding nan opposing player to boxout.
Zoriah Jackson, Senior, Highland
Senior power forward Zoriah Jackson is one six seniors on the Highland Hornets. Standing at 6’1″ Jackson has great length leading to her ability to not have many shots altered. The senior mainly operates within 12 feet of the basket and can grab several rebounds a game at almost five a game.
Mika Juan Mika Juan 5'9" | SF Sandia Prep | 2023 State NM , Junior, Sandia Prep
Forward Mike Juan from the Sundevils of Sandia Prep, has good size and is a hard worker inside the paint area where most of her scoring is done. The junior has the ability to head to the free-throw line multiple times a game as she draws contact when operating inside 10 feet.
