With entry limited to a few parents the game really didn’t have a home court feel for St. John’s. The Cadets were cruising to open the game keeping the lead for the entire first quarter. In the second quarter the game took a turn in the Panthers favor as they went on a mad run and a 10 point lead late in the period and led 27-18 at the half. In the second half it appeard as if the game was going to be a blowout before a 3 pointer by Ava O’Neil sandwiched between Kyndal Walker Kyndal Walker 5'9" | PG St. John's College | 2024 State MD free throws helped stop the bleeding, still the Panthers ended the third quarter with a comfortable 33-24 lead. The Cadets stepped up the defense in the fourth and an O’Neil three gave SJC the lead for the first time since the first quarter putting them up 43-42 with 2:10 to play. With regulation ending tied at 45 the Cadets could only score 2 points in the extra period and the Panthers leave D.C. with a 50-47 victory.
Top Players:
Jaelyn Talley – Wing – Paul VI – 2022
Talley scored from three, from the line and around the basket and paced the Panthers scoring their first and last points of the game. She had consistent play whether they were trailing or ahead.
Ava O’Neil – Point Guard – St. John’s – 2024
Ava came off the bench and made several big plays including the go ahead three pointer late in the game. She hit an earlier three the start the big run for SJC and had a huge steal and assist to force overtime.
Louis Volker – Wing – Paul VI – 2023
Volker had a run all by herself with a three pointer, steal and layup, another steal and an assist and some free throws. It was a spurt that got PVI a 10 point lead in the second quarter.
Delaney Thomas Delaney Thomas 6'2" | C St. John's College | 2023 State MD – Forward – St. John’s – 2022
Thomas opened the game with a three, scoring the first five points of the game. Her three accuracy open paths for her to drive of the pump fake. She had a clear advantage in the paint but ironically got zero touches in overtime.
Asia Boone – Wing – Paul VI – 2023
Boone made big shots from beyond the arc and her threat to shoot opened the floor for PVI. She had solid defense even as the Panthers switched on on screens.
Kyndal Walker Kyndal Walker 5'9" | PG St. John's College | 2024 State MD – Guard – St. John’s – 2024
Kyndal was able to attack and get to the line where she only missed one free throw. She had a rebound off of her own miss that she put back out hustling everyone on the court. She handled the full court pressure better than the point guards, SJC may want to consider using her at point more in those situations.
